I. Meeting people

N.: Hi, I'm your new neighbour. I'm moving into apartment 204. My name is Noriko.

M.: O, nice to meet you. I'm Maria. I'm in apartment 203. Can I give you a hand?

N.: Oh, thanks. Good to meet you too.

M.: And where are you from, Noriko?

N.: I'm from Japan, from Osaka.

M.: Really? Are you studying here?

N.: No, I'm a reporter. I've just started working for «World News». And how about you, Maria? What do you do?

M.: I'm a law student. I go to the university. Say, why don't you come over for coffee later?

N.: Oh, thanks a lot. I'd love to.

A.: Sonia! Hi, how are you? This is Philip, my brother. Philip, Sonia is on my course at the college.

S.: Hi, Philip.

P.: I am pleased to meet you, Sonia. So, how are you? Where are you from?

S.: I'm from Milan, Italy.

P.: How are you finding London? Are you doing the same course as Katrin?

S.: Yes, I'm really pleased I'm doing it.

P.: Do you have any free time for a rest?

S.: Yes, I go out with my friends from the college quite a lot. The thing I love most in London is the theatre. I go there at least once a week. Are you interested in theatre?

P.: Yes. I go there occasionally. I see musicals once in a while. I prefer the cinema and films.

S.: I see. And do you like football?

P.: Yes.

S.: I play football.

P.: Really? In Milan?

S.: No, here in London. I play for Italian women's team, near the park. We play every Sunday.

P.: I'll come and watch you play one Sunday.

A.: Excuse me, where is the restaurant, please?

В.: The restaurant? It's on the ground floor. Let me show you.

A.: Thank you very much.

В.: Do you speak English?

A.: I'm afraid not. Not very well.

В.: Are you Polish?

A.: No, I'm not. I'm from Russia.

В.: Really? I'm English. I'm from Manchester. I'm Jane. Jane Baley.

A.: Nice to meet you. I'm Alexander.

В.: Is it your first name?

A.: Sorry, what's this?

В.: My first name is Jane. My surname is Baley. What's your surname?

A.: My first name is Alexander. My surname is Smirnov. I'm Alexander Smirnov.

В.: I am glad to meet you, Mr. Smirnov.

A.: You can call me Alexander.

В.: Alex, perhaps?

A.: Ok, call me Alex or Sasha.

В.: All right, let me call you Sasha. It's Russian name.

B: Pleased to meet you. I have a feeling we've met before.

C: I meet you on my way to the work. I have long wished to meet you. How are you?

B: Fine, thanks. And you?

C: Me too. The party is funny, isn't it?

B: Yes. What do you do?

C: I'm a waitress in the restaurant. And what do you do for a living?

B: I'm a porter in the hotel. Let's dance. I like this music.

C: Sorry, I have to go home. We'll get up with you tomorrow.

Standard Phrases:

B: Sorry, I don't remember.

A: Right. I'll make sure he gets the message.
