Travelling by Air

Air Travel is frequently the most practical method of covering the large distances between sights in the USA. It is the fastest, the most convenient and frequently the most economical means of transportation. You can usually purchase an airline ticket from New York to Los Angeles (a distance of 3000 miles or 5000 km) for under $400 and sometimes under $300 by taking advantage of special promotions. The trip via airplane takes only 5 hours. Train fare between the same cities costs about $300 to $500 and requires a minimum of 3 to 4 days. The transcontinental bus costs about $225 and requires at least 3 days of incessant travel. You could drive it in about 5 days, but the gasoline and lodging alone will likely cost considerably more than the airfare.

International airports in the U. S. include restaurants, cocktail lounges, gift shops, duty free shops for international flights, public telephones, restrooms, first aid station and special telephones connected to area hotels/motels, bus/ limousine services and car rental firms. Free shuttle service is provided between all terminals and remote parking lots.

Travelers can exchange foreign currency, use the services of a business center and use automatic teller machines to receive cash. In addition, several banking institutions are near airports for other transactions.

Baggage Storage. Large items that do not fit lockers can be stored here. Packaging and luggage repair services are also available.

Electronic Lockers. Electronic lockers are available in airports. Instructions are posted on lockers. Charges are in 30-minute increments.

Lost and Found. Contact your airline first if you have a problem with lost suitcases or other items. Then check with restaurants, taxis, buses, and other services before checking with the Lost and Found.

International Free Luggage Allowance. Economy class passengers will be permitted to check up to two bags at 70 lbs/32 kgs each. World Business Class passengers are entitled to check a 3rd bag provided it is within the weight and size allowance for carry-on luggage.

Carry-On Luggage. One carry-on item is accepted, with a maximum outside linear dimension of 115 cm and not more than 18kgs. In addition to the one piece of carry-on luggage, passengers may also carry a purse or briefcase or laptop computer.

There is an inconvenience you have to be prepared for when travelling long distances by plane. It's the jet-lag, a difference between the time you are accustomed to and the new time. At first you won't be feeling very well because of it, but don't worry – it won't take you long to get used to it.

AIRPORT FORMALITIES

Nowadays people who go on business mostly travel by air, as it is the fastest means of travelling. Passengers are requested to arrive at the airport two hours before departure time on international flights and an hour before on domestic flights as there must be enough time to complete the necessary airport formalities.

The rules for passengers who are going abroad are similar in most countries but sometimes there might be a slight difference in formalities. If, for instance, you are supposed to begin with going through the Customs, you'd better fill in the Customs declaration before you talk to the Customs officer. An experienced customs officer usually smells a smuggler, but he may ask any passenger routine questions, for instance, "Have you got anything to declare?" or "Any spirits, tobacco, presents?" The usual answers would be, "Yes, I've got some valuables, but I've put them all down in the declaration, or "I've got two blocks of cigarettes for my own use" or something of that kind.

Passengers must register their tickets, weigh in and register the luggage. Most airlines have at least two classes of travel, first class and economy class, which is cheaper. Each passenger of more than two years of age has free luggage allowance. Generally this limit is 20 kg for economy class passengers and 30 kg for first class passengers. Excess luggage must be paid for extra, except for some articles that can be carried free of charge.

Each passenger is given a boarding pass to be shown at the departure gate and again to the stewardess when boarding the plane.

Landing formalities and customs regulations are more or less the same in all countries. While still on board the plane the passenger is given an arrival card to fill in.

After the passengers disembarked, officials will check his passport and visa. In some countries they will check the passenger’s certificate of vaccination. The traveller is also requested to go through the AIDS check within ten or fourteen days of his arrival in the country. If the traveller fails to do so, some strict measures could be taken by the authorities including imprisonment (in some countries) or payment of a considerable penalty.

When the formalities have been completed the passenger goes to the Customs for an examination of his luggage. Customs officers are civil servants who have power to examine your luggage and even search you. The Customs regulations state what articles are liable to duty and what are duty-free. Some articles which are liable to duty are allowed to be brought in duty-free if the traveller does not exceed a certain fixed quota. Such items are mentioned in a duty-free quota list. Articles, which may not be brought in the country or taken out of it, are included in a prohibited articles list.

If the traveller has any articles which come under Customs restrictions he is expected to declare them. That is, he is asked to name the item, stating its value and other particulars. The declaration is made either orally or in writing on a declaration form. If the traveller is charged some duty on some of his articles he is given a receipt. As a rule personal belongings may be brought in duty-free.

In some cases the Customs officer may ask you to open your bags for inspection. It sometimes happens that a passenger’s luggage is carefully gone through to prevent smuggling. It is the Customs officer’s job to carry this out efficiently and in as pleasant a manner as possible. You will wish this examination to be finished quickly, and if you cooperate by giving full and truthful replies, you should have no troubles at all. After you are through with all Customs formalities the Customs officer will put a stamp on each piece of luggage or chalk item off. If the traveler has nothing to declare he may just go through the “green” section of the Customs.
