24. Elite and anti-elite concepts of art and literature.

Heterogeneity, and sometimes polarity of artistic interests and tastes of society gave rise to two diametrically opposite (and equally unilateral) concepts of art and literature: elite and anti-elite. Elites are called, first, community groups, with sufficient completeness of joining a certain culture (scientific, philosophical, artistic, technical, state), and is active in her acting. Second, the same term (mainly in terms word "elitism") referred to a social phenomenon, mostly negative. This - the haughty isolation representatives of the privileged groups, their alienation from society and people. Anti-elite concept of art denies the insularity of artistic work, its closed nature from the public. Both concepts (and elitist anti-elite) one-sided that they absolutize the disproportion between the art in its entirety and that can be understood by the general public: they think this imbalance universal and unavoidable. Elite conception of art and literature was developed and substantiated in H.Ortegi-i-Gasset’s works. He wrote in his article “Dehumanization of art”: “Art is only for a very small number of people”. Ideas antielitarnoy concept of art and literature were formulated in the works N.A.Berdyaev, T.Manna, L.Tolstoi. In the XX century elite conception of art portrayed very well. According 0rtegi y Gasset, the art "intended <...> only a very small number category of people ", which enhance the art of today, for whom the future - is "art for an artist, not for the masses," the art of castes, not demos ".

25. Literary hierarchies.

In modern literature all artistic works divided into several groups. They form hierarchy. There are three groups of artistic works: 1) Classics or the high literature. It is characterized by the urgency and importance of raised issues, profound ideological content, genre and stylistic diversity and richness, with capacity of artistic images. Work of this group are the pattern of literary creation. They do not lose their social and artistic significance in the historical development of mankind and they are of interest to readers of different generations. For example Alice's Adventures in WonderlandHYPERLINK "http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24213.Alice_s_Adventures_in_Wonderland_Through_the_Looking_Glass"  The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children. 2) Belles-lettres. Literally, belles-lettres is a French phrase meaning "beautiful" or "fine" writing. In this sense, therefore, it includes all literary works — especially fictionpoetrydrama, or essays — valued for their aesthetic qualities and originality of style and tone. The term thus can be used to refer to literature generally. Belles-lettres occupies an intermediate position between “high” and “low” literature. It is characterized by topical character of the raised issues, by following the literary and social, historical and cultural trends of the time. 3) Mass literature. It can be named as a paraliterature and also a trivial literature. Mass literature is characterized by the fact that it is oriented on the reader, who is guided by the prevailing social stereotypes.
