APPEARANCE

How important is your appearance? Although everyone wants to be good-looking, but not always beautiful people are happier people. There are some people who think that women who are exceptionally pretty and men who are particularly handsome must be stupid. They believe that only unattractive people can be intelligent.

On the other hand, no one wants to be ugly, and have a face that nobody wants to look at; and no one wants to be plain either and have a face that is easily forgotten.

Being attractive is like being rich — it can help you find happiness, but it doesn't always make you happy. So maybe the best thing is not too much worry about how you look, but simply try to be an interesting person. For interesting people have interesting faces, and interesting faces are almost always attractive.

1. Who is the most beautiful woman and the best-looking man in the world?

2. Do you think it's difficult to be very good-looking? Why? (Why not?)

3. How important is it to look attractive? Why?

4. Look at these English expressions and then decide if you agree with them.

a) Your face is your fortune.

b) Beauty lies in the lover's eyes.

A face may be round, oval or square. In summer some people may have freckles on their faces. Old people have wrinkled faces.

People's hair may be long or short, thin or thick, good or bad, straight or curly. Its colour may be black or fair, chestnut or red. Old people have grey hair.

Eyes may be large or small. They may be of different colour, grey, green, black, or hazel (brown).

Cheeks may be rosy or pale (if a person is ill), plump or hollow (if a person is very ill). Some people have dimples in their cheeks when they smile.

Noses may be straight (the Greek), wide, sharp, turned up, snub.

Lips can be full, thin, sensual, with down (up)-turned corners.

Play a guessing game.

Questions:

Is her nose straight?

What color lipstick does she have? Etc.

It is said, that we make our first impression about someone within seconds. Indeed, we form opinions about someone without actually knowing that person, paying attention to how he looks, how he moves, how he is dressed, what car he drives and how well he is built. Appearance includes grooming and generally taking care of yourself. It means going to the hair dresser’s, keeping your hands clean and tidy, using perfume. Additionally, it also means keeping fit, and following a healthy diet. Generally, if you take care of your body well, you will make a much better and more confident impression on people. Success in life is often a combination of things, such as intelligence or being at the right place at the right time. Physical attractiveness also has a significant impact on how much people got paid, how educated they are, and how they evaluate themselves.
