Let’s get acquainted

LET’S START, GUYS!

Vocabulary: greetings, personal information, family and relatives, idioms and sat-expressions of the topic under consideration.

Grammar: to be, to have, Pronouns.

Language practice: introductions and socialising.

Exercise 1. Read the dialogue and translate it into Ukrainian. Then dramatize it in parts.

A: Hallo, I’m David. David Johnes.

B: Oh, nice to meet you! And my name is Martin Anderson.

A: Pleased to meet you too.

B: Let me introduce my wife - Helena Maria Christensen.

A: Helena Ma …. I am sorry. I didn’t quite catch your name.

C: Call me Helena.

A: Sure! So, guys, you don’t seem to be English. Where are you from?

B: Oh, my wife and I are Danish. As a matter of fact, I was born in England, but I lost my parents when I was a baby and lived in Denmark with my grandmother, so that Danish is really my native language.

A: So, how are you getting on? When did you arrive?

B: We arrived in England last February. We were both sick on the journey. To make matters worse, I left my camera on the ship.

A: Have you two settled down already?

C: Yes, we were lucky enough to find a house in the suburbs of London. Our two children have joined us.

A: And what are you?

B: Well, I am an engineer and have worked for several years at a factory. My wife is working as a part-time nurse in a hospital …..

Exercise 2. Dramatize the dialogue in different moods. As if you were:

- Nice to meet you, John?

- I am glad to meet you too. How are you Jane?

- Oh, I am great, thank you. And you?

- I am fine, thanks.

 Well done!!!

Now, read the text about the family of Peter and Ann Johnson.

Think about your family. Write down 5 things which: everyone in the family does; only you do; only your mother does; only your father does.

Part I

I'm Peter Johnson. I'm a teacher of English. I'm 45. I'm married. This is my wife. Her name is Ann Johnson. She is 40. She is an engineer. She usually works on the computer. These are our children Ann and Andrew. Andrew is 20. Ann is 15. Andrew is a student. Ann is a schoolgirl. These are my parents. My father's name is Nick. My mother's name is Mary. They don't work. They are retired.

My family is not very large. There are four of us – my wife, my son, my daughter and I. My wife is rather slender, blue-eyed and dark-haired. She is a good-natured and easy-going person. She is a good engineer and has a senior position at her office. Her hobby is cooking.

My son takes after me. He is tall, dark-eyed and dark-haired. He is fond of sports. He plays tennis. But his hobby is chess.

My daughter is a blue-eyed girl with fair hair. She is rather pretty, a little hot-headed. Her hobby is music. She plays the piano. She is fond of classical music.

My parents are musicians too. My father is a violinist, my mother is a pianist. Now they are on pension.

We have a lot of relatives on my wife's and my side. Some of our aunts, uncles and cousins live in London. My parents-in-law do not live in London. They live in Manchester. My wife's sister is married, she lives in Manchester too. She works for a firm as an accountant. She makes calculations on the computer. Her brother is single. He is a serviceman and he lives in Edinburgh.

My relatives live in Aberdeen. My younger sister is married. She got married 5 years ago. Her husband is an engineer. They live in a small town not far from Aberdeen. We sometimes go there on our days-off. I like to play with my niece and nephew. They are very funny children. My brother is a student of the technical college. He is graduating from it this year.

As for me, you already know that I'm a University teacher. I give lectures, take classes and seminars there. I'm fond of my students. They study International Business. They work in various fields. Some of them are good, others are very talented.

Part II

I have got a lot of friends. One of them is Ben Croydon. He works as an interpreter for a company. His wife Kate is a doctor. They have two children. Their names are Nick and Nelly. Nick is not in London. He is a student of the university and is on vacation now. He is also going to work as an interpreter at some enterprise. He can speak French. Nelly goes to school. She is in the tenth form. She is going to apply to an engineering college. I suppose she wants to be a designer.

The Croydons are going to come to our place next Sunday. We are going to celebrate my wife's birthday. A lot of relatives and friends of ours are going to come to congratulate her on her 40th birthday. They are going to bring a lot of flowers and presents. Ann is going to bake our favourite apple-pie and cakes. My mother-in-law will help her to do it.

Peter Skrypnyk is going to come too. He is my colleague. He is from Ukraine, now he is in Kyiv. His family is not in Kyiv. They are in Kirovohrad. He has a wife and three children. His wife's name is Julia. Julia is attractive, slim, fair-haired. His elder son Pavlo is dark-haired, brown-eyed and very tall. Slavik, his younger son, is dark-haired too, he looks like his elder brother. Mary is leaving school this year. She is a pretty girl with a straight nose and blue eyes. As for Peter Skrypnyk, he is good-natured, tall, lean and rather handsome. He is a hard-working and an easy-going person.

Now, let’s talk about your family!

How large is your family?

How old are you?

Have you a lot of relatives?

What do your parents do?

Where do they live?

What kind of person is your best friend?

What does he/she do?

Has he/she got any sisters and brothers?

A Day with Granny

Two weeks ago, my cousin George and I decided to visit our grandmother in London.

We went up to London in the morning. After lunch we all three decided to sail down the Thames to Greenwich to have a look at the old ship-But suddenly it started raining, so we had to change our plans.

We made up our minds to visit Madame Tussaud's instead. George hadn't been there before.

We were lucky: we got a taxi — and there was no queue! It was great fun seeing all the wax figures. There were some new ones I hadn't seen before.

After an hour Granny felt a little tired and wanted to sit down and rest for a moment. She told us to go down and take a look at all the murderers in the cellar. We promised to be back again in half an hour.

When we came back we saw two American tourists standing in front of Granny. One of them was taking a photo of her.

We didn't understand why — but then we heard one of them say, "She sure looks like a real woman!" — You should have seen their face:, a moment later when Granny opened her eyes!

(After M. Cain)
