Volcanic Activity

The evidence of volcanic eruptions is found in rocks of all periods. It seems that igneous activity must have been going on all the way through geologic time. Apparently no particular geographic environment has promoted such activity which seems to have occurred on the ocean bottom, in the highest mountain ranges and on open plains.

454 active volcanoes situated mostly in distinct belts of the world are known at present. 283 of them border the Pacific Ocean. The rest of the volcanoes subsist in the Pacific main basin arranged along the lines running toward the northwest. The second belt, called the Alpine-Himalayan belt, boasts 98 volcanoes and extends from south-eastern Europe through the Mediterranean and southern Asia into the East Indies Archipelago.

Contemporary volcanic activity in the Atlantic is limited for the most part to islands on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. These comprise the Azores, the Canary Islands and many others.

In the Indian Ocean active volcanoes exist on Malagasy, Mauritius, Rodrigues and other islands.
