The History of Ukraine
The history of Ukraine dates centuries back. In ancient times the territory of present-day Ukraine was inhabited by Slavs tribes who in the 9th century established the mighty state the Kyiv Rus, which at that moment was one of the most powerful states in Europe. Yaroslav the Wise, Princess Olga, Prince Oleg are the brightest persons of those times, played a very important part in the political, cultural and educational development of Kyiv Rus. Gradually Ukrainian community developed into a full-fledged nation with its own culture, language, traditions and mode of life. Then and more later the struggle of the Ukrainian people for liberty and independence was long and hard. The war of 1648-1654 was of great importance for the Ukrainian history. Bogdan Hmelnitskiy, outstanding leader of the people of those years, changed the history of the whole state. It was a historical event for both Ukraine and Russia. The war of 1941-1945 made no less important changes for Ukraine which concerned development as an independent state and nation.
