You'll also find expensive electrical goods towards the front of the shop, and the cheaper items at the back – so you'll have to walk through the profitable aisles to get to the cheap ones! They hope that while hunting around for products on your shopping list you will throw a few extra items into your trolley.

№ 2. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is planning a service where passengers can use Facebook and LinkedIn as an aid when booking a flight. Launch of the service is expected in early 2012. There's no word on whether participants will be charged a fee.

№ 3. The winters of 2009–10 and 2010–11 in the UK were the coldest in the previous 25 years. This has been taken by some people as evidence that global warming isn't happening. In truth, however, scientists have determined that 2010 was one of the warmest years on record.

While the UK, northern Europe and the eastern US have been subject to two very cold winters, the last two winters in northeast Canada and Greenland have been unusually mild.

№ 6. Hire Scheme aims to get Londoners on bikes

A fleet of 6,000 bicycles for hire will hit the streets of central London soon when the city’s mayor Boris Johnson launches a scheme intended to fuel a cycling revolution in the congested capital. The initiative, which follows similar projects in cities including Paris and Montreal, aims to ease overcrowding on London’s commuter network.

Nicknamed “Boris’s Bikes” after cycle-mad Mayor Boris Johnson, the system is free for the first half hour, although the rate rises steeply if the cycles are used for longer periods, with a maximum daily charge of 50 pounds.

London has tried to learn lessons from Paris and Montreal, making changes to prevent vandalism and theft. Initially, many of Paris’s hire bikes were thrown in the River Seine or discovered for sale in markets in Africa. At a hefty 23 kg, the London bike’s weight will discourage thieves as well as cutting out the wobbles for less confident cyclists. A Reuters journalist who tested out one of the bikes in the busy traffic around Trafalgar Square found it sturdy and safe but felt its design sacrificed speed for stability.

The cycle hire scheme is just one in a series of moves by Johnson to make the winding, traffic-choked streets of the capital more bike-friendly. Motorists have to pay a daily congestion charge if they drive into the city center. Two new bright blue “cycle superhighways” were unveiled this week, providing cyclists with extra road space and better visibility at traffic lights. Cyclists often have to jostle for space alongside London’s red buses and black taxis and shouting matches between riders and drivers are common.

  1. What is the purpose of the Hire Scheme?

    1. To increase the number of bikes in London streets;

    2. To make London streets suitable for biking;

    3. To make riders and drivers more friendly to each other;

    4. To motivate Londoners use bikes rather than cars.

  1. How did London try to avoid problems which Paris and Montreal faced?

    1. They bought cheap bikes in Africa;

    2. They made rented bikes heavier;

    3. They refused to rent bikes to untrained cyclists;

    4. They increased the daily charge for hiring a bike.

  1. What steps are taken to make cycling safer?

    1. More traffic lights are put on the roads;

    2. Competitions are organized between riders and drivers;

    3. The cycle ways are painted blue;

    4. Special cycle ways are made to give riders additional road space.
