That's my beer... That was!

I was in a small country pub. I had just sat down with a pint of beer. Suddenly this huge man - he looked like a boxer -came over, picked up my beer, drank it, banged the glass down on the table, stared at me, and then walked away without saying anything. I suppose I should have said something, but I was scared stiff! What would you have done?

(Mr. A.Watney, Hull)

A saucy thief

I had parked my car and I was taking a short cut through the side door of the restaurant in a large store. Half-way across the restaurant I spotted my father eating pie, chips and peas - he often eats there. I crept up behind him, put my hand over his shoulder, took a chip off the plate, dipped it in the tomato sauce and ate it. Then I realized that the man was not my father! I was so embarrassed! I couldn't say a word! What would you have done? (Miss H P Branston, Cardiff)

In deep water

I was on a touring holiday in France. It was a very hot day and I stopped at a small deserted beach. I hadn't got my swimming-costume with me, but it was early in the morning and there were no people or houses in sight. So I took off all my clothes and swam out to sea. I'm a very strong swimmer. I lay on my back, closed my eyes, and relaxed in the water. When I looked back at the beach, a coach had arrived and there were thirty or forty people sitting on the sand having a picnic! What would you have done? (Mr.T.Horniman, Ipswich)

Have you ever had such an experience? Tell your group mates about it and ask them to say what they would have done in your place.

THE CAN OPENER:

Where Would We Be Without It?

Can you imagine life today without a can opener? Without the simple tool that we take for granted, how would we open cans? We need the can opener to gain the convenience that the use of canned goods gives us. Were there no can openers, we wouldn't be able to so easily consume all the foods that we do. Were there no can openers, we would not be eating the canned fish, the prepared sauces or the out-of-season fruits and vegetables. But for canned tuna, the tuna sandwich wouldn't have become popular.

First developed in England in 1810, the first "tin canisters" were actually heavier than the food they contained. British soldiers opened cans of food with bayonets, or when those methods failed; they would shoot their rifles at the cans. A better way to open cans had to be found; if not, the soldiers would continue with their dangerous methods.

Within a few years, the cans began to be made of a lighter metal. Then in 1858, a "can opener" was devised. It looked like a curved bayonet, and it had to be used correctly. If not, it could be lethal. It was used during the U.S. Civil War in the early 1860s. But for the U.S. military that discovered this primitive can opener, it would have become extinct. Clearly, though, a better can opener was needed and in 1870 that device was finally invented by William J. Lyman. With this new device, people could now open tin cans easily, and the demand for canned goods grew. By 1895, canned goods were a familiar sight on grocery store shelves. Without canned goods, no grocery store would last long.

How fortunate we are that lightweight cans and easy-to-use can openers were invented; otherwise, we would not have the convenience and variety in foods that we do today. More than convenience, a can opener is one of the necessities of life; should there be an emergency such as a long power outage, canned foods—and thus, a can opener—would be of top importance.
