Lesson 7

Professions. Past Simple

Aims and objectives: to present new vocabulary; to practise the use of Past Simple; to develop students' listening skills; to develop students ability of working in groups.

Warm up

The teacher’s greeting. Good morning, students! I’m glad to see you. How are you?

Phonetic exercise

Students revise sounds [d], [t], and pronunciation of letter “r” in different variants. The rhyme is on the blackboard (or in the handouts):

Drivers drive cars,

Doctors treat us,

In the country, farmers Grow rich harvest,

Actors wear wigs,

Teachers teach kids.Checking on homework

Students read and explain their answers to ex. 4 and ex. 7.

Answers (ex. 4): 1 c; 2 c; 3 b; 4 b; 5 a.

Reading

Students read the home text (in turn) and explain the Tenses of the verbs (ex. 7).

Answers: 1 helps; 2 comes; 3 cleans; 4 dusts; 5 does; 6 helps; 7 have/like; 8 makes; 9 are doing/are having; 10 is raining; 11 are taking; 12 are; 13 wearing.

Game

Teacher prepares some slips of paper with the names of professions (names may be repeated). Each of the students gets a slip. Students have the task to think about these words and show the profession by gestures one by one. Others have to guess what the profession is and call it.

Introducing the topic

Presentation of vocabulary. Students listen and repeat the words. Then they look at the pictures and translate the words.

Students write the words and their definitions into vocabularies (without transcription).

Speaking

Teacher divides the class into three groups. Each group gets a task (dialogue). Students read the dialogues and act them.

Teacher focuses students’ attention on the grammar part (p. 19). Students read the table aloud. Teacher talks with students, asks questions:

  1. When do we use Past Simple Tense?

  2. What word can help us identify this Tense?

  3. What way we have to change the verbs?

  4. What do you know about regular and irregular verbs?

Grammar practice

Students read the words (ex. 3, p. 19) and put them into Past Simple.Relaxation

The teacher makes movements with the students. Teacher uses any rhyme for physical exercises. For example:

I measure from top of my head to my too».

I measure my arms starting here by nose.

I measure my legs and I measure me all

I measure to see if I’m growing tall.

Speaking

Students are divided into pairs and each of them writes a list of their relatives’ names. The task is to ask each other about one person from the list as it is in an example (ex. 4, p. 20).

Homework

Ex. 5, p. 20; write pronunciation of the words Into vocabulary and learn the words.

Checking on homework

Students read answers to the sentences (some of them).

Lexical dictation Teacher dictates the words in Ukrainian, students write them down in English. After writing students make two to five sentences with the words from dictation. The task in whole is marked 1 to 12, words without sentences are marked 1 to 9. Teacher has to say students about it. .

Reading

Students work with the text “City Grandfather, Country Grand­father”. They have to look at the pictures, read the text on their own and make the task (ex. 2, 3, p. 21). After reading and making the tasks teacher asks students.

Relaxation

Playing a mime game. Teacher proposes the students to think of the action. (You pick up berries in the forest.) One student tells it to his/her neighbour, and this one shows the action to the class. Other students try to guess what is he / she doing. Then “the actor” tells his action to the next student.

Listening. Speaking

Students look at the pictures (ex. 4, p. 22), listen to the text one more time and tick the objects Steve mentions in his story.

Teacher divides students into pairs. Each pair the questions (ex. l,p. 20). Their task is to prepare dialogues and net them to the class. Students use the example (ex. 5, p. 22).

Homework

Ex. 6, p. 22; to prepare to grammar revision.

Summary

Teacher asks students about their relatives in the > 11 \ and in the country.
