Lesson 85 Reading. "Mrs. Bear's Valentine"

Aims and objectives: to revise students' speaking skills; to develop students reading skills; to practise scanning of the text for specific information.

Warm up

The teacher's greeting. Good morning, students! I’m glad to see you. How are you?

Phonetic exercise

Students revise sound [t]. The twister is on the blackboard (or in the handouts);

□ I have got a date at a quarter to eight; I’ll see you at the gate, so don’t be late.Introducing the topic

То activate vocabulary of the UNIT 8, the teacher asks students the questions (ex. 1, p. 180).

The teacher presents the text “Mrs. Bear’s Valentine” (ex. 2, p. 180­181). Students read the text and answer the teacher’s question “How Mr. Bear congratulated Mrs. Bear on a holiday?”

Relaxation

The teacher makes movements with the students. Teacher uses any rhyme for physical exercises. For example:

Raise your hands, high in the air,

At your sides, on your hair.

Raise your hands as before While you clap: one, two, three, four.

I put my hands upon my hips,

I turn myself around.

I raise my hands above my head And then I touch the ground.

Reading

Focus on gist. Students look trough the text one more time and say who (ex. 3, p. 181):

  • remind of Valentine’s Day in the morning; (Mrs. Bear)

  • has brought Mrs. Bear a Valentine card; (the postal worker)

  • reads the Valentine’s card out loud; (Mrs. Bear)

  • wrote the Valentine’s card to Mrs. Bear; (Little Bear)

  • brought a big jar of honey. (Mr. Bear)

Focus on grammar. Students complete the sentences (ex. 4, p. 182) with the necessary prepositions. Then they read them in turn and check.

Answers: 1 on; 2 with; 3 outside; 4 of honey/up; 5 of/in/on; 6 down / for / on.

Focus on pronunciation. Students find in the text the words with the following sounds (ex. 5, p. 182) and write them down as it is in the example.

Focus on details. Students complete the sentences with the necessary words according to the text (ex. 6, p. 182). Checking in class.

Answers: 1 Valentine’s; 2 card / envelope; 3 mark; 4 jar/honey; 5 hug; 6 breakfast.Writing

To practise vocabulary and writing skills, students write some sen­tences about presents they got / gave on holidays.

Homework

Part A, B, p. 182-183; to bring some paper, clue, scissors and some coloured felt pens, photos or pictures.

Summary and feedback

The teacher summarizes the work by asking for students’ feedback.

Project "My Favourite Holiday"

Aims and objectives: to design a poster about favourite holiday; to develop students' ability to work on their own; to develop students' creativity.

Warm up

The teacher's greeting. Good morning, students! I’m glad to see you. How are you?

Phonetic exercise

Students revise sounds [n] and [b]. The twister is on the black­board (or in the handouts):

Introducing the topic

Teacher presents the examples of projects to students. Teacher can use text-book project or real projects made by other students (p. 183).

Teacher divides students into small groups (no more than four). Stu­dents read the task A (p. 182). Students look through the projects, and Iben start to work. Students have to join their works to make a group project.Relaxation

Where are you going to, my little cat?

I’m going to town to buy a hat.

Speaking

Students in groups present their posters to other classmates and give them more information about pictures. Then they answer other students’ questions.
