Project "Around Cities and Villages in Ukraine/Great Britain"

Aims and objectives: to design a poster about one of the cities or villages in Ukraine or Great Britain; to develop students' ability to work on their own;- to develop students' creativity.

Warm up

Students revise sounds [1], [ae], [o] and [t/]. The twister is on the blackboard (or in the handouts):

Introducing the topic

Teacher presents the examples of projects to students. Teacher can use text-book project or real projects made by other students (p. 164-165).

Teacher divides students into small groups (no more than four). Stu­dents read the task A (p. 163). Students look through the projects, and then start to work. Students have to join their works to make a group project.

Relaxation

The teacher makes movements with the students. Teacher uses any rhyme for physical exercises. For example:

Hands on your hips,

Hands on your knees,

Put them behind you,

If you please.

Touch your shoulders,

Touch your nose,

Touch your ears,

Touch your toes.

Reading

Students read part I and part II of the project paying attention to the questions (p. 163, part B)

Speaking

Work in groups. Students in groups present their posters to other classmates and give them more information about pictures. Then they answer other students’ questions.

Teacher organizes a display of students’ works.

To repeat vocabulary.

National Holidays. Cardinal and Ordinal Numerals

Aims and objectives: to present the topic; to introduce and practise vocabu­lary; to develop students' reading and speaking skills; to develop students' skills of giving opinions.

Warm up

The teacher's greeting. Good morning, students! I’m glad to see you. How are you?

Phonetic exercise

Students revise sounds [s], [1] and [ai]. They listen to the rhyme and repeat it. The rhyme is on the blackboard (or in the handouts):

Simple Simon met a pieman going to the fair;

Said Simple Simon to the pieman “Let me taste your ware”

Said the pieman to Simple Simon “Show me first your penny”

Said Simple Simon to the pieman “Sir, I have not any!”

Introducing the topic

To introduce the topic of the lesson the teacher can use the com­puter presentation or prepare pictures, or use the pictures from ex. 1, p. 166. First, the students read the example and the words from the box. They have to match the pictures A to E and the words. Then stu­dents talk about holidays marked with the pictures.Answers: A New Year’s Day; В Halloween; С Mother’s Day; D Christ­mas; E Easter.

Speaking

The teacher divides students into pairs, and they ask their partners about their favourite holidays as in the example (ex. 2, p. 166-167).

Relaxation

The teacher makes movements with the students. Teacher uses any rhyme for physical exercises. For example:

Listening. Reading

Students listen to the invitations (ex. 3, p. 167) and read them. Af­ter reading, they ask and answer the questions.

Grammar

The teacher presents students Cardinal and Ordinal numerals. Students look at the grammar box (p. 167) and answer the teacher’s questions:

  1. What are the cardinal numerals? (We can ask the question “how many” or “what number” to them)

  2. When do we use cardinal numerals? (To talk about quantity or number of things)

  3. What are the ordinal numerals? (We can ask the question “which” to them)

  4. When do we use ordinal numerals? (To talk about the order of the things)

What are the grammar features of ordinal numerals? (We put “the” before them and add -th ending; for 1st 2nd and 3rd — we use “the first”, “the second”, “the third” to them)To practise cardinal and ordinal numerals, students have to say the dates (ex. 5, p. 168) and answer what holidays do we celebrate on these days. The teacher has to draw students’ attention some date of these holidays are in Ukraine only.

Answers:

  • 14.01. — We celebrate New Year on the fourteenth of January. (It’s about Old New Year).

  • 14.02. — We celebrate St. Valentine’s Day on the fourteenth of February.

  • 08.03. — We celebrate Women’s Day on the eighth of March.

  • 23.04. — This year we celebrate Easter on the twenty-fourth of April. (Only this year, because this holiday hasn’t a set date in the calendar).

  • 01.05. — We celebrate May Day on the first of May.

  • 09.05. — We celebrate Victory Day on the ninth of May.

  • 28.06. — We celebrate Constitution Day on the twenty-eighth of June.

  • 24.08. — We celebrate Independence Day on the twenty-fourth of August.

  • 01.09. — We celebrate the Day of Knowledge on the first of Sep­tember.

  • 31.10. — We celebrate Halloween on the thirty-first of October.

  • 19.12. — We celebrate St. Nicholas day on the nineteenth of De­cember.

  • 25.12. — We celebrate Christmas on the twenty-fifth of Decem­ber. (The teacher has to say about the Catholic Christmas and the Orthodox Christmas on the seventh of January.)

The teacher can use ex. 6, p. 168 to increase students’ knowledge about holidays.

Students work in pairs. They ask and answer the question as in the example (ex. 7, p. 168).

Homework

Ex. 8, p. 168.

Checking on homework

Students (selectively) read their works.Introducing the topic

To introduce the topic of the lesson the teacher can use ex. 1, p. 169 or another variant of pictures. Students have to listen to the sen­tences 1 to 8, match them to the pictures and choose the correct word: “make” or “do”. The teacher uses the sentences like these.

Examples of sentences

In our family we usually prepare for holidays. My Mum does the cleaning' before every holiday. My father also does the dusting in all corners of our flat. My sister likes to make postcards on her own. I usu­ally make the decorations for our flat. We also do the shopping to buy some special food and drinks. My little sister likes to do the shopping with the whole family. Then my Mum and I make a special dish for a holiday. If it is a birthday, my Mum always makes a birthday cake. And in the evening I usually make a festive tea for my family.

Answers: 1 G (make); 2 D (does); 3 A (make); 4 C (make); 5 H (do); 6 В (makes); 7 E (does); 8 F (make).

Reading

Students read the text (ex. 2, p. 169-170) and match the pictures A to C to the paragraphs lto 3. While reading, students mark unknown words and expressions, and the teacher explains them after reading.

After reading activity. Students talk about the same traditions in Ukraine.

Relaxation

The teacher makes movements with the students. Teacher uses any rhyme for physical exercises. For example:

This is our father, short and stout.

This our baby, sure to grow.

And her is our family all in a row.

Speaking

Work in pairs. The teacher divides students into pairs. They have to make short dialogues with the questions from ex. 3, p. 170.

Work in class. Students read the situation (ex. 6, p. 171) and talk about Christmas traditions in Ukraine, and ask about traditions in Great-Britain.Grammar

Students look at the grammar part (ex. 4, p. 170), read the sen­tences and complete the rules. Then, students listen to the rules and repeat them.

To practise the use of prepositions “at”, “on” and “in”, students complete the sentences with the prepositions (ex. 5, p. 171).

Ex. 7, ex. 8, p. 171; to use the letter as the example.
