M. Skoryk

Myroslav Skoryk (born 1938) is an outstanding composer musicologist, teacher, public worker. Since 1999, he headed the chair of history of Ukrainian music. Under his guidance the chair continues traditions, founded by I. Lyashenko, develops actual scientific directions of research in the history of Ukrainian music, musicology, revives it’s unknown and forgotten pages, ethno-culturology, music sociology, ethno-psychology, psychology of art creation and musical pedagogy. The chair organizes scientific conferences, readings, round tables of Ukrainian music culture problems, holds up inter-chairs measures of Ukrainian-music propaganda, and takes an active part in the work of the Music-Ukrainistic Centre.

Myroslav Skoryk graduated from the Lviv M.Lysenko State Conservatoire in professors S.Ludkewich, R.Simowich and A.Soltis’s composition class, post-graduate course of Moscow P.Tchaikovsky State Conservatoire in prof. D.Kabalevsky’s class. He received a solid foundation in composition and theory. Skoryk states him-self "My teachers were well known composers and educators, including Stanislav Liudkevych, a graduate of the Vienna Conservatory, Roman Simovych a graduate from the Prague Conservatory in 1933, and Adam Soltys (1890-1968), a graduate of the Berlin Conservatory." Skoryk’s final exam piece was a Cantata 'Vesna' (Spring), on verses of Ivan Franko for soloists, mixed choir and symphonic orchestra. Skoryk also wrote some piano music during this time, including a cycle of piano pieces 'V Karpatakh' ('In the Carpathian Mountains) and the 'Piano Sonata in C .

In 1967 M.Skoryk defended the thesis on the topic “Tonal System of S. Prokofiev” to receive a scientific/academic degree “Candidate of Arts”. Since 1963, he had been working at Lviv, and since 1966 – at the Kyiv State P.Tchaikovsky Conservatoire, where he had been teaching music theory and composition. Since 1984 he was the professor of the Kyiv Conservatoire, professor and the Head of the Composition chair in Lviv Conservatoire (since 1989 – Lviv Highest M.Lysenko State Music Institute now – Lviv M. Lysenko State Music Academy. Since 1968 M.Skoryk is the secretary of Ukrainian Composer’s Union, since 1984 – the Head of Lviv organization of Ukrainian Composers’ Union. M. Skoryk is one of the prominent representatives of art generation, which had entered into Ukrainian music in 1960-s under title “The new folk wave”. His music, which joined bright national color and composer’s technique of 20 century, has taken the main place in concert repertoire of Ukrainian and foreign performers and collectives. It is, namely, “The Gutsul triptych” and “Carpathian concert” for symphony orchestra, four piano- and 5 violin concertos, 7 partitas for different performances’ staffs, 2 sonatas for violin and piano, numerous piano compositions etc. Popularity and the number of performances of some works, for example, “The Melody”, comes to the high indicators of pop-music, and it is not by chance – his songs-hits of 1960 influenced on the development of modern Ukrainian variety very much.
