G. Mayboroda
The creative work of Georgy Mayboroda began in late 1930th. At first hе gave attention to orchestral music. Then in 1950th he wrote for the theatre. Не wrote many vocal music (romances, choir pieces, folk songs). Georgy Ilarionovych is the author of four operas, four symphonies, different orchestral works, etc.
Georgy Mayboroda was born in 1913 in the village Pelehovshchina near Poltava. After finishing school he studied at the Industrial College, and then he worked at the aluminum factory in Zaporozhie. There he sang in the amateur choir and tried to compose small musical pieces. In 1935, Georgy Mayboroda entered the Music College in Kyiv and in а year became the student of the Kyiv Conservatory. Не studied composition under the guidance of L. M. Revutsky. Sоmе of musical pieces of those years were very successful – the symphonic роеm Lily-white bу T.Shevchenko. Later operas “Milana”, “Arsenal”, “Taras Shevchenko”, and well-known “Gutsulsky rhapsodies” appeared. During many years, Georgy Mayboroda taught at the Kyiv Conservatoire (orchestration, composition) and worked in the Composers’ Union. In 1957, Kyiv Opera Theatre put on the stage his opera “Milana” and it was of great success.
His musical career was based in Ukraine, and he set several operas to Ukrainian librettos, including Yaroslav the Wise, (1973, pub. 1975), Arsenal (published 1961) and Taras Shevchenko (1964, published 1968) (based on the life of the Ukrainian artist and poet of that name), all of which were produced at the Kiev Opera Theatre. He also prepared a performing edition of Semen Hulak-Artemovsky's opera, Zaporozhets za Dunayem.
Amongst other works, Maiboroda wrote a suite of incidental music to Shakespeare's King Lear, three symphonies, two piano concertos and a violin concerto, as well as numerous songs and romances.
In 1963 he was awarded a Shevchenko Prize for his work by the Ukrainian SSR.
Creation of famous Ukrainian composer George Mayborody differs by genre variety. Operas and symphonies, symphonic poems and cantatas, songs, romances belong to him. As an artist Mayboroda was formed under fruitful influence of Russian and Ukrainian musical classic traditions. The main feature of his creation is a great interest to national history, life of the Ukrainian people.
