Ship construction
1. What are the main parts of the ship? The main parts of the ship are the hull, the superstructure, the engines, the propeller, the rudder etc.
2. What spaces are there in the hull? The hull contains the engine-room, cargo space and a number of tanks ( forepeak, afterpeak tanks, double bottom tanks).
3. What spaces are there in the superstructure? There are such spaces as a navigation bridge, a messroom, a galley, a store room, a laundry, a sickbay, recreation spaces, cabins, a chart desk etc.
4. What ship dimensions do you know?They are:beam, freeboard, draught, air draught, length overall etc.
5. What is a double bottom/tweendeck? Double bottom is the space between the bottom and the holds.
Tweendeck is the deck between the cargo holds and the main deck.
Crew organization and routine operations
1. How many departments are there usually on board cargo ship? What are they?
2 departments, they are Deck and Engine department ( on passenger vessels + Catering department).
2. Who is the head of the Deck/ Engine/ catering Department?The head of Deck department is the Chief Officer, the Head of Engine department is the Chief Engineer, the head of Catering department is the Chief Steward.
3. What are the officers/ petty officers/ ratings of the Deck/ Engine/ catering Department?
Deck Dep: Bosun, Engine Dep: Pumpman, Catering: Chief Cook, the Second Cook.

An Electrician is responsible for all electric and electronic equipment, an Able Seaman- ratings, are responsible for general maintenance of the ship, a Motorman is an engine room rating.
10. What tools and instruments do you know? I know a screwdriver, a hammer, a hacksaw, a wrench, a spanner, a drilling machine, a chisel etc.
Personal safety aboard
1. Why is it important to take precautions while working aboard? It’s important to take precautions because your life depends on it. If you don’t follow safety rules, you can die or get some injury.
2. What personal protective clothing can help you to avoid injuries? They are: a safety helmet, ear plugs, ear muffs, chemical resistant shields, respirators, half-mask respirators, breathing apparatuses, gloves, safety boots etc.
3. What is the best way to remind a person about the importance of safety? There are books, posters, signs and even videos, safety manuals etc.
4. Give the examples of safety rules aboard.
