Task 16
Read the text and render it in English.
Memory
It is interesting to know that memory, one of the basic components of the computer, is often called storage. It stores calculation program, the calculation formulae, initial data, intermediate and final results. Therefore, the functions of the computer memory may be classified in the following way. Firstly, the computer memory must store the information transmitted from the input and other devices. Secondly, memory should produce the information needed for the computation process to all other devices of the computer.
Generally, memory consists of two main parts called the main, primary or internal, memory and the secondary, or external memory. The advantage of the primary memory is an extremely high speed. The secondary memory has a comparatively low speed, but it is capable of storing far greater amount of information than the main memory. The primary storage takes a direct part in the computational process. The secondary storage provides the information necessary for a single step in the sequence of computation steps.
The most important performance characteristics of a storage unit are speed, capacity and reliability. Its speed is measured in cycle time. Its capacity is measured by the number of machine words or binary digits. Its reliability is measured by the number of failures per unit of time.
Task 17
Retell the text using one of the plans bellow
Plan 1
What is memory?
What is the function of memory?
What are the main parts of memory?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a storage unit?
What are their functions?
What are performance characteristics of the main and secondary memory?
What units are performance characteristics measured by?
Plan 2
The definition of memory.
The main functions of memory.
Classification of memory.
Advantages and disadvantages of memory components.
The functions of memory components.
Performance characteristics of memory.
The units of measuring the performance characteristics of memory.
Plan 3
Memory is one of the basic components of the computer.
Memory stores initial data, intermediate and final results.
It produces the information needed to other devices of the computer.
Memory consists of the main (internal) and the secondary (external) storage.
The main memory has high speed, but small capacity; the secondary memory possesses lower speed but greater capacity.
The main memory performs computation; the secondary memory provides information sequentially, step by step.
The performance characteristics – speed, capacity and reliability – are measured by cycles, binary digits and the number of failures per unit of time.
Task 18
How would you describe what computer hardware is to someone who knows a little about computers? Work in pairs or small groups.
Task 19
Now read the text and try to describe computer hardware again using the key vocabulary in bold type.
Computer hardware refers to the physical parts of a computer and related devices. Internal hardware devices include motherboards, hard drives, and RAM. External hardware devices include monitors, keyboards, mice, printers, and scanners.
The internal hardware parts of a computer are often referred to as components, while external hardware devices are usually called peripherals. Together, they all fall under the category of computer hardware. Software, on the other hand, consists of the programs and applications that run on computers. Because software runs on computer hardware, software programs often have system requirements that list the minimum hardware required for the software to run.
Task 20
Match each piece of hardware on the left with its function on the right.
1. Storage device |
a. displays the processed data. |
2. Input device |
b. holds the programs and data being used by the processor. |
3. Output device |
c. does all the processing and controls the peripherals. |
4. Main memory |
d. allows data to be entered. |
5. Processor |
f. provides permanent storage for programs and data. |
Task 21
Fill in the gaps using the words from the box.
keyboard input unit requirements graphics the CPU arithmetic control input calculation
_______ devices are used to supply the values needed by the computer and instructions to tell the computer how to operate on the value. _______ vary greatly from machine to machine.
Information is usually entered into a computer via a _____, with the characters typed on the screen. In English speaking countries the keyboard would have the QWERTY(1) layout. Many computers provide graphics commands which can be used to build up pictures. _______ are very important for the interface between the human user and the computer.
The arithmetic unit of a digital computer performs the actual work of computation and calculation. It carries out its job by the use of logic circuits. Modern computers use components called integrated circuits.
The control unit of a digital computer is an administrative or switching section. It receives information entering the machine and decides how and when to perform operations. It tells the arithmetic unit what to do, where to get the necessary information. It knows when the arithmetic unit has completed a ______, and it tells the arithmetic unit what to do with the results and what to do next.
The _______ unit and the ______ unit are usually grouped together in a computer and are the central processing unit or CPU. The ______ gets instructions from the memory and carries out the operations required. On microcomputers this is done by a single silicon chip called a microprocessor.
(1) QWERTY стандартна для англомовних країн клавіатура (перший ряд літер починається з послідовності QWERTY)
Task 22
Complete the sentences by giving English equivalents to the Russian words/phrases.
(Вимоги до вводу) vary greatly from machine to machine.
Graphics are very important (для взаємодїї) between the human user and the computer.
The arithmetic unit of (цифрового комп’ютера) performs the actual work of computation and (вычислений).
It (виконує) its work by the use of (логічних послідовностей, ланцюгів).
It receives information (що вводиться до комп’ютера) and decides how and when to perform operations.
(Блок управління) is an administrative or switching section.
On microcomputers this is done by (кремнева мікросхема).
Task 23
Translate into English.
Майже в усіх комп’ютерах, як у "звичайних"(ordinary), так і в супер, реалізована (is realized / performed) одна й та сама конструктивна ідея (design). Вона полягає в тому, що вся інформація, яка вводиться та переробляється (input and processed), а також зберігається (is stored) в комп’ютері у вигляді певної множини двійкових розрядів (set of binary digits) або битів.
Task 24
Put the words in the proper order to make a sentence.
graphics, for, the interface, between, are, the human user, very important, the computer.
computer, entered, is, usually, information, into, a keyboard, via.
