1) Find 10 sentences where modal verbs are used and translate them into Ukrainian.

1) Say who in the story:

* “… was … the oldest orphan …” (p.3);

* “… had been … everybody’s bidding…” (p.4);

* “…was the matron of the asylum.” (p.4);

* “… were hurrying home to … cheerful firesides…” (p.4);

* “…was waving … arm toward an automobile waiting in the curved drive.” (p.5);

* “… came singing up the stairs and down the corridor …” (p.5);

* “… was by nature a sunny soul, and had always taken the smallest excuse to be amused.” (p.5);

I. Phonetic drills

1. Transcribe and pronounce the following words:

II. Vocabulary work

1. Read the text and find these word-combinations. Translate them into Ukrainian. Make up your own sentences with them:

  • to get acquainted (p.11);

  • to behave towards smb (p.11);

  • to be called smb (p.11);

  • to be divided into (p.12);

  • to obey rules (p.12);

  • at times (p.14);

  4. Everybody had to obey the rules that were proclaimed in the Academy.

  5. At times Mr. Grane dreamt about his own future house and a happy family.

  6. Mrs. Brown never made the slightest effort to be polite and kind.

  7. The family was exited about the news and was going to leave the city.

  8. All her life she had one unbreakable rule: not to eat after 7 o’clock p.m.

  9. The pupils’ impertinent behaviour attracted the people’s attention in the street.

10)Though the girls roomed together they had different tastes and they always cooked separately.

5. Read and translate the following extract from the text into Ukrainian: “October 10th … Jerusha Abbot” (pp.14-15).
