1. Transcribe and pronounce the following words:

5. Translate the following sentences from English into Ukrainian:

1. I leaned my head forward to hear what they were saying.

2. When you lean a ladder against a wall, make sure that its feet are dug firmly into the ground for safety.

3. That poor little boy just wanted to have an ordinary house that his friends had.

4. The soldiers had orders to tear the children from their mothers’ arms if they refused to give them up.

5. The cake consisted of flour, butter, eggs and sugar.

6. The man waved his arm toward the taxi standing in the square.

7. To my great surprise the little girl could count from one to one thousand.

8. Helen didn’t take any interest in her husband’s business.

9. Some progress in her study was evident for the teacher.

10. The school was at a respectful distance from Pete’s house.

6. Read and translate the following extract from the text into Ukrainian: “That is his wish … to a Trustee of the John Grier Home ” (pp.8-9).
