Teaching pronunciation
For Russian learners of English it is often a question whether to pronounce the sound [t] or [d] in the inflections of the verbs. To prevent pronunciation mistakes of this kind I would suggest an explanation of phonetic rules and a pronunciation drill.
First we would recall the rules of pronunciation, determining choose of one of these two sounds (as they are students of the 10th form they are sure to remember something about it), if necessary I’ll explain these rules so that it would be clear foe everybody.
The second step is the pronunciation drill itself. I will write provide students with a text, which includes lots of examples on the rules discussed. Then, I will ask the students to read the text, to find these examples and to read one by one (in a chain). I will ask both bright and slow students to read the words, if I’m not satisfied with the way some words are pronounced, I’ll read them myself and will also ask students to repeat them after me in chorus. Some of these words in the text are: asked, watched, practiced, liked, etc. After that, the students are to do an exercise, in which all the examples should be divided into two groups according to their pronunciation. The students will have several minutes to do it individually, then we will check it together.
The text.
Paulo’s New School
Paulo moved from Florida to New York, because his father got a new job in New York. Since it was during the school year, Paulo changed schools. He had many friends at his old school, and he wondered if his new classmates would like him. He worried about his new school a lot.
On the first day of school, Paulo met his new teacher. She asked his name. She said, “Hello. I’m Ms. Parker, and I would like for you to tell the class about yourself.” The class listened to Paulo’s story of moving to New York. They were very nice to Paulo. During the day, they studied verbs. The class also watched a video and practiced role playing a trip to the dentist. Paulo tried to learn a lot that day. He liked his new teacher and classmates. They all helped him so much.
