Vocabulary and speech exercises.

1. Read the words and study their meaning.

Many people go to the market in search of bargains.

2. Read the word-combinations , give their Russian equivalents and memorize them:

2.1 Pick up a bargain , men’s and women’s, clothing stores , sell goods , pay for the purchase , buy shoes , go from counter to counter , be composed of many departments, take customers to different floors , things for sale , choose suits , reasonable prices , self-service shop.

3. Read the following sentences with new words and put all kinds of questions to them:

  1. You can buy all sorts of meat at the butcher’s.

  2. I want a pair of brown gloves , size 6.

  3. All the things for sale are on the counters.

  4. The Department store sell the most comfortable furniture.

  5. Sometimes many people go to the market in search of bargains.

  6. In a self-service shop the customer goes from counter to counter selecting and putting into a basket what he wishes to buy.

  7. The shop-assistant helps the customer in finding what he wants.

  8. Shopping is a pleasant pastime when you can afford to buy the things you like.

  9. Most of the shops open at 9 a.m. and close at 8 or 9 at night.

  10. In big shops the customer does not pay the shop-assistant but takes the bill to the cash-desk and pays cashier.

  11. There is a tendency in England and America for the small shops to disappear.

4. Insert the suitable word from the active vocabulary.
