GRAMMAR EXERCISES

I. Put these sentences in Present Perfect, using corresponding adver­bial modifiers of time.

Pattern 1: I am writing a letter (already)

I have already written the letter

1. Bill is writing a letter (already). 2. He was reading a book (already). 3. They will go home (just). 4. I saw him (just).

Pattern 2: I was in London last year (never)

I have never been to London.

1. He is in Kyiv (never). 2. He explained me this rule (never).

3. I saw this film (never). She did, this work (never).

Pattern 3: He lived in Paris in 1993 (since)

He has lived in Paris since 1993.

(Він живе в Парижі з 1993 року.)

1. I did not see him June (since). 2. They did not speak English last year (since). 3. I did not do it last week (since).

Pattern 4: Nick is trying to learn driving (this year).

Nick has tried to learn driving this year.

1. Your friends are writing a letter to you (this week). 2. He is leaving for Minsk (this month). 3.1 am learning grammar rule (today). 4. They are finishing their work (this year).

II. Translate these sentences into Ukrainian, paying attention to the tense form of the verb-predicate.

1. I have attended lectures on history since May. I attended lectures on history in May. 3. He has entered the University this year. 4. He entered the University last year. 5. Have you passed your examination in physics? 6. Did you pass your examination last month? 7. He has already returned to Lviv. 8. He returned to Lviv last Friday. 9. They haven’t received any good results. 10. They didn4 receive any good results when they worked with this type of equipment. 11. They have installed the new equipment in the laboratory. 12. When did they install the new equipment?

III. Answer the questions:

1. Have you ever got a bad mark at the examination? 2. Have you ever been to Canada? 3. Have you ever drunk coca- cola? 4. Have you ever gone travelling? 5. Have you ever read an English book in the original? 6. Have you ever failed in an examination? 7. Have you ever heard this song? 8. Have you ever skated? 9. Have you ever studied French? 10. How many times have you worked in the laboratory this week? 11. Have you seen your friend today? 12. What cities of our country have you visited? 13. What films have you seen this month? 14. How many times have you travelled outside Lviv?

IV. Open the brackets and put the verbs in the Present Perfect or Past Indefinite tenses.

1. «Where’s Mary»? «She (to go shopping) just». 2. «How long Lane and Mary (to be) friends?» «I think since 1995, when they (to come) to study at New York University.» 3. «You ever (to have) any trouble with English?» «No, I never (to have) any trouble with it. I like it very much.» 4. «The children (to have dinner) yet?» «Not yet. They just (to return) from the park.» 5. «How long you (to know) Peter?» «I (to know him since childhood.» «How’s Ann? V. Translate these sentences into English:

1. Як довго він викладає історію в цій школі? — П’ять років, з 1991 року. 2. Я чув, що Петро хворіє останнім часом. - Так, він прохворів три тижні, а зараз він почуває себе краще. 3. Ти вже зробив домашні завдання? - Ще ні. Я зараз розв’язую задачі. 4. Чи ти коли-небудь грав у шахи з Білом? Чи добре він грає? ~ Я не знаю. Я ніколи не грав у шахи з ним. 5. Чи ви вже поснідали? - Ще ні. - Тоді поснідаємо разом. 6. Чи давно ви розмовляєте іспанською мовою? — 3 дитинства. Я провів дитинство на Кубі.

CONVERSATION PRACTICE

I. Read these dialogues. Make up the dialogues of your own, using them as models:

1)

• Hi, Jane, how are you? I haven’t seen you for ages.

• I’m fine, thanks.

• And how’s your sister? I haven’t seen her lately at col­lege.

• She’s ill. She’s been ill for a month already.

• Oh, I’m so sorry.

2)

• Hi, Helen, I feel like going to the movies tonight.

• So do I.

• Have you seen the film ...? /

• No, I haven’t.

• I haven’t seen it either, though this film has already been on for a couple of weeks.

• I think we’ll manage to buy tickets.

• Let’s hope so.

2. Comment on these sentences using pattern. Translate them into Ukrainian.

Pattern: I am a student.

• So am І. Я також (студент).

Peter lives in Lviv.

• So do І. Я також (живу).

Ann has many friends.

• So have І. Я також (маю).

She can read English.

• So can I Я також (можу читати).

1. My brother goes to school. (Nick). 2. Jane can play the piano (my sister). 3. This boy is in the park (I). 4. Alex has done this work already (Ann). 5. Mary can speak English very well (I). II. Work in pairs. Make up short dialogues using in answers to the questions the phrases So am I; So do I; So have I; So can I, etc. (See pattern in Ex.2).
