10. Recorded Information 2

Call Student B. Make notes during the calls and check that you have written the information you're given correctly.

Call Rising Sun Travel. Ask about flight times from Tokyo to Sydney on Saturdays.

A new member of staff is starting work next week. Ring your colleague Pat and find out the name of the new member of staff and his/her extension number.

Now Student B will call you and ask for information. Answer their questions using the following information. Give spellings where you think it is necessary/helpful.

You are the Managing Director's secretary, Sam. Answer B's call. The meeting is at two o'clock tomorrow. It will probably last about an hour and a half. The person giving the presentation is Matt Fletcher.

You are Lesley. To get to your office from the station:

  • turn left out of the station

  • turn right at the traffic lights

  • the office is the second large building on the left (it's a five-minute walk).

11. Messages 3

Read the instructions below quickly and think briefly about what you are going to say. When you are ready, take turns to practise leaving messages on an answering machine / voice mail.

When Student B gives you a cue like 'You've reached the voice mail of X. Please leave your message', give your message.

When B is giving a message, note down the important points. Check your notes and messages together when you have finished.

Invent a name, address, company and phone number, or use your own. You want some information about the latest products as soon as possible. Give your name, address and phone number.

Invent a name or use your own. You work for goeurope.com. Call and leave a message for Ms Patel. There's a flight to Berlin from London City Airport at 08.30 and another at 10.45. Ask her to call back. Give your name and number.

Invent a name or use your own. Call your colleague. Say who you are and ask if you can change your meeting tomorrow to half an hour later. Say when your colleague can call you back.

12. Messages 4

You are going to make two calls to Student B and receive two calls from Student B.

You are Alex. Tell your colleague, Hans, that you have to cancel next Tuesday's meeting as you have been called away to Hong Kong. Suggest a new date for your meeting.

You are John. Call Fiona and offer her a new time for the appointment on Friday.

You are Tamara. Respond to Bill's call.

You are Michel. Respond to Juan's call.

13 Consolidation

You are going to receive one call from Student B and make one call to Student B.

You are Ms. Lo's PA (Personal Assistant). Student B calls you. Offer B an appointment time/day and keep offering until you lose patience.

Invent a name or use your own. Phone Mr. Prada's PA. Try to make an appointment with Mr. Prada. You can't manage any of the times offered. Remain polite and say you will try again later.
