5. Messages 1

You are going to give two messages to Student B and take two messages from Student B.

Work with another Student A to prepare your messages. Discuss the key words and any details that may be difficult for Student B.

Practise your messages with your partner.

Join Student B and give your messages. Then take Student B's messages. Make notes.

Then check each other's messages and discuss how well you gave them.

Your name is Jo Finch. You want to leave a message for Diego Fuentes. Your fax machine isn't working. You want him to send all faxes to 44 1295 783466 for the rest of this week.

Your name is Les Jarvis. You want to leave a message for Zaida Alpay. You made a mistake when you sent an e-mail to her yesterday. The price of the printer is $195, not $175.

6. Messages 2

You are going to give two messages to Student B and take two messages from Student B.

Don't clarify the details in your messages until B asks you to.

When B thinks they have got the messages right, they will give the same messages to you, but they will clarify all the details.

You must check that B gives you exactly the same message that you gave before.

Your name is Georgie Eastman. You want to leave a message for Concha Munoz. You want her to know immediately that you couldn't get a reservation for her at The Plaza. She will be staying instead at The Grand, and the address is 44, Central Avenue. You will meet her there at ten o'clock in the morning.

Your name is Jackie Innis. You want to leave a message for Brad Durango. You're at the airport and have just heard that your flight is delayed. It is going to arrive at 16.40 instead of 14.20. If Brad Durango can't meet you, he needs to ring you as soon as possible on your mobile. The number is 07973482316.

7. Consolidation

Call Student B.

Ask to be put through to Vince West in Marketing.

If B thinks Mr West isn't there, insist you want to speak to him. You know he works there.

If Student B tells you that you're wrong and gets angry, say goodbye. Put the phone down.

8. Appointments and Arrangements

You are going to make two calls to Student B and receive one call from Student B.

Invent a name or use your own. Call Mr Klein's PA. Apologise and say you have to cancel your appointment - give the day and time. Say you don't want another appointment.

You are Ms Teser's secretary. Student B calls you. Offer a new time for B's appointment. Acknowledge B's apology and thanks, and finish the conversation.

You are Stevie Fleet. Call your colleague, Lindsay Castle, to check the details of your meeting. Confirm the details given and thank Lindsay. Finish the conversation.

9. Recorded Information 1

Prepare to read the information below as clearly as you can to Student B. Pay attention to stress and chunking.

When you are ready, take turns to read your information. B should note down the important information, using abbreviations if possible.
