Singular form

Plural form

a carver

an apron

+ - s to a singular form, e. g.:

carvers

aprons

a workbench

a box

a dish

+ - es if a singular form ends in s, z, x, sh, and ch, e. g.:

workbenches

boxes

dishes

a copy

a laboratory

-y (preceded by a consonant) + -es = - ies

copies

laboratories

a tray

an alloy

-y (preceded by a vowel) + -s = - ys

trays

alloys

a hero

a tomato

-o (preceded by a consonant) + es = - oes

heroes

tomatoes (but: pianos, photos, radios, solos)

a knife

-f or –fe + es = -ves

knives

but: chiefs, kerchiefs, handkerchiefs, hoofs, roofs, safes

NB! Irregular plural forms:

a man – men

a woman – women

a child – children

a foot – feet

a tooth – teeth

a goose – geese

a mouse – mice

a louse – lice

an ox – oxen

Nouns which have no singular: tweezers, scissors, trousers, glasses, measles, mumps, police.

Nouns which have no plural: advice, friendship, water, sugar, news.

The plural of some nouns is the same as the singular: sheep, fish, deer.

I. Write the plural of each of these nouns.
