Drug smugglers set fire to boat

Drug smugglers whose fishing boat had been chased across the Caribbean all night set fire to their cargo of cocaine, worth an estimated £500 million, after being foiled by what is believed to have been one of the biggest ever anti-drugs operations.The pursuit of the small vessel by the Royal Navy support ship RFA Wave Ruler ended with five tonnes of cocaine going up in smoke. The ten men in the boat were arrested by US Coastguard officers northeast of Barbados as they tried to flee in smaller craft. The chase took place early on Sunday but the details had to remain confidential until yesterday. RFA Wave Ruler became involved after an intelligence tip that a fishing vessel with a large haul of cocaine had set off from an island in the region.
