Tips & Advice for Creating an English Environment within your home

Create an English zone in your home to display the work your child completes at home. All your child’s English work can be displaying and stored within the English zone.

Designate a set time each day for English study at home. Children thrive on routines. Making English study part of your regular daily routine will help your child to clearly distinguish the new language from their mother tongue and give them something to look forward to.

Make learning English a part of your child’s routine that they look forward to. Encourage your child to select a special item of clothing or special set of pens, crayons and notebook that they can use during this designated time. Perhaps allow them to watch an English cartoon for 5 minutes when they have completed their task.

Определите время на каждый день, когда ребёнок сможет заниматься английским языком. Детям необходим режим занятий. Если вы сделаете изучение английского частью его распорядка дня, это поможет ему отличить новый изучаемый язык от его родного языка и смотивирует его готовность к обучению.

Попросите ребёнка выбрать особые ручки, карандаши или тетрадку, и может даже особый элемент одежды, которые он будет использовать в это особое время. Покажите ему мультфильм на английском языке в течение 5 минут, сразу после того, как он выполнит задание.

Vary the type of activity that your child completes at home. Here are a few examples:

1. Encourage your child to draw and color pictures of the vocabulary they are learning at school. You can be confident that your child will learn English vocabulary on their English course. Encourage your child to draw each new vocabulary item that they encounter onto a sheet of A4 paper. Help your child to post his/her pictures onto the wall in the English zone. Frequently point to each of the pictures and ask your child simple questions, e.g. What’s this?, what color is it? How many? At the end of each unit help your child to take the pictures off the wall and file the pictures in a special folder (your child’s very own picture dictionary). In doing this your child can personalize and take ownership of the language that they are learning. Thus it can also increase their motivation for learning.

2. Create a small library of colorful, well illustrated, English story books. Real story books are far more interesting to children than English textbooks. In large cities you have access to authentic English texts in the bookstores. Example texts include, Postman Pat, The Mr Men and Little Miss Series, Bob the Builder & Thomas the Tank Engine. These titles are well illustrated, present language in context and provide authentic language exposure.

Reading with your children from encourages a positive attitude to books and reading and provides an opportunity for children to think of themselves as successful readers. Children who have had years of sharing books (especially favorites over and over again) may appear to be more fluent or accurate than they actually are because they can memorize whole parts of books. You need to be aware of this when you share books brought home from school. You should ask your children lots of closed (one word answers) and open questions (those that have many different answers) and encourage your child to talk about different parts of the story.

2. Создайте свою библиотеку цветных, красивых детских книг на английском языке. Настоящие книги гораздо интереснее учебников. В больших городах можно очень легко найти любые книги на английском языке в книжных магазинах. Помните об этом, когда видите, что ребёнок приносит книги из школы, задавайте ребёнку закрытые вопрос(на которые есть только один ответ) или открытые вопросы (есть несколько вариантов ответов), а также просите его рассказать о различных эпизодах из этих книг.

3. Practice singing the songs that your child learns at school. Song is a key component to all good very young learner programs. However some children often feel uncomfortable singing the songs in the class in front of other learners. Help your child to increase his/her confidence in class by practicing the songs they learn at home together. The more practice your child gets at home the more confident your child will be in class. Bear in mind that there are very few things better than songs, chants and rhymes for practicing English stress, rhythm and intonation. Each of which is necessary for good pronunciation.

4. Access educational websites for young children. The Internet has become a phenomenal tool for assisting young learners. Children love computers and playing educational games can be a much healthier treat for your child than a bar of chocolate or an hour of TV. Some language programs provide computer based activities for the children to re-enforce what they learn in class while others include great resources for you to print out and use with your child at home.

5. Use simple English with your child at home. Communicating with your child in English is essential, even if it is limited to saying, Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Night. By speaking English to your child you show them that you value the importance of learning English.

Don’t be afraid of teaching your child an incorrect pronunciation. At a young age, the most important thing to encourage is your child’s natural drive to communicate. Your child will be able to differentiate between correct and incorrect pronunciation as long as they receive sufficient authentic exposure. This can be provided through reading, websites, classroom teaching, song and story cds and videos, and numerous other sources.

5.Используйте не сложный английский, разговаривая с ребёнком дома.
