Hotel Management

Our society is made up of all kinds of organisations such as government departments, unions, companies, agencies, and the like. In all these organisations there are people carrying out the work of a manager. They all have a responsibility to use the resources of their organisation effectively and economically to achieve its objectives. As for the hotel management it has certain peculiarities. It is simultaneous management and administration of a hotel. First, managers must return the profit to the owners who often themselves manage a small hotel or an inn. Second, they must deliver the services and quality that the guests expect. Fortunately, those two responsibilities often go together, that is, the greater satisfaction the guest receives, the greater are the prospects that the hotel will be financially successful. In fact, the head of the hotel may have various titles such as general manager, managing director or resident manager. This person is responsible for establishing the policies and procedures of operation for the hotel and for seeing that they are carried out properly. In small hotels he may the owner or co-owner, while in a large hotel he is probably a professional hotelman or hotelier. In a chain-operated hotel the manager usually works within a specific tightly coordinated framework. Many hotels become famous because of the distinctive personality that is given to them by their manager. In a very real sense, the manager is the host who offers the hospitality of the establishment to his guests. He is a business executive that means he must have sound knowledge of accounting, taxation, and business law, sales and promotion, public relations as well as such common functions as traditional services and the function of the hotel itself. Today many universities and special schools give courses in hotel management and administration. So, a hotel manager is a person responsible for planning and directing the work of the hotel. He monitors and controls the work taking corrective actions when it is necessary. The manager may also have the power to hire or fire employees or to promote them. Hiring and training are vital responsibilities of the manager. The personality, experience and expertise of every employee are a matter of importance in hotel business where courtesy is one of the main services. Continuing in-house training programmes are customary in large hotels in order to maintain the standards of the business. The great increase in tourism in recent years has resulted in the construction of the hotels which are located in the areas where local customs differ greatly from those of the hotels' customers. In such cases it is essential to give intensive training to employees in every job category before the hotel opens. In a large hotel, the manager coordinates the work of the department heads who supervise housekeeping, advertising and promotion, food service and the rest of the operation. Managers may direct either workers or several supervisors who control the workers. A manager must be familiar with the work of the teams he supervises, though he does not need to be the best in any or all of the areas. It is more important for him to know how to manage and lead personnel than to know its work in detail. In addition to the manager, many hotels include assistant managers on the staff. They are often assigned to different shifts. The usually have a desk in the lobby near the reception area since they have to deal with routine problems such as unsatisfactory room assignments or overbooking. The assistant managers are usually in training for more responsible jobs in hotel management.
