I. C. Modal Verbs

CANCOULD – BE ABLE TO мочь, уметь, быть в состоянии

MUST должен, SHOULD следует, должен, OUGHT TO следует

HAVE TO приходится, должен, вынужден; BE TO должен, предстоит

NEED нужно, быть должным, обязанным NEEDNT не нужно

Peter can be late. Петр может опоздать.

It must be cold outside. Должно быть на улице холодно.

I have to work hard. Мне приходится упорно работать.

I cant drive a car. Я не умею водить машину.

You mustn’t play with matches. Нельзя играть со спичками.

You neednt do it today. Вам не нужно (нет необходимости) (Вы можете не) делать это сегодня.

Can I come on Friday? Можно мне прийти в пятницу?

Could the boy read when he was six? Мальчик мог (умел) читать, когда ему было шесть лет?

Do you have to phone? Вы должны позвонить?

He ought to finish his homework. Он должен сделать домашнее задание.

Should we invite Mark to the party? Следует ли пригласить Марка на вечеринку?

They were to inspect the car. Они должны были осмотреть автомобиль.

I. E. Read the text about Sarah and say about yourself

Well, there are a lot of things I can't do! I can't draw and I can't drive a car, but I want to have lessons. I can use a computer. I can ... I can type.

Now, then ... languages. I can speak French and German, I don't know any Italian at all, and I know about five words in Spanish – no, I can't speak Spanish! And I can't play any musical instruments, not the piano, the guitar, the saxophone or anything.

And I can cook. I think I'm a very good, well, no, just good ... a good cook! What about sports? Mm. Well, I certainly can't ski and skate, but I'm quite good at tennis, yes, I can play tennis. Well, I usually win when I play with my friends. I can run a mile. And I can swim, of course.
