What can you tell me about eating habits Belarus?
Nowadays in Belarus people are used to eat 3 or 4 times a day. Most of the time, Belarusians eat at home instead of going out as it’s much cheaper.
The first meal of the day is breakfast. It’s usually something light. Many people simply eat bread with cheese and ham and coffee or tea. Though there are still people who think the beginning of the day should be substantial. It means you’d better eat pancakes, omelets or porridge for breakfast.
The second meal is usually dinner. Belarusians have it around 2 or 3pm. You can start eating soup or borsch. Then you move to meat or fish with vegetables for the main course, and to finish you pass to stewed fruit.
Soup plays an important role in Belarusian cuisine. Meat is popular, especially pork. The most favourite poultry is chicken. The most preferable methods of cooking are braising ([breɪz] тушить) and frying. As for spices garlic, coriander [,kɔrɪ'ændə] and marjoram (['mɑ:ʤ(ə)rəm] майоран, душица) are the most popular.
The last meal of the day, supper is traditionally a much smaller meal and is often a plate of pasta or rice with some meat and vegetables.
Can you tell me how to cook one of your favourite dishes?
The main ingredient of Belarusian food is definitely potatoes. We have lots of recipes. One of them is potato pancakes or “draniki” as we call them. They are made from grated potatoes with the juice, flour, onion, soda and salt. All ingredients are mixed together. Pancakes are formed from the batter with a spoon and then fried. Draniki are often served with sour cream.
What questions will you ask a friend who has invited you to a pot-luck party?
What food can I bring to your party? How many people are coming to the party? Do you have enough drinks? What time does the party start? Can I give you a hand in arranging everything for the party?
My friend wants to know more about national cuisines. Which national dishes would you recommend him to taste?
I think I should start with our Belarusian cuisine. The main ingredient of Belarusian food is definitely potatoes. Our cuisine has dozens of recipes of dishes from potatoes and all those dishes have different taste and texture. The most well-known potato dish is draniki and kolduny. Another popular national dish is sour pancakes with mochanka. Mochanka is a kind of sauce. And as we eat lots of soup I would recommend you to try one of it.
A lot of pupils refuse to have meals at school. What do you think about it?
I know our school cooks do their best to make our lunches healthy and delicious. They do take into account all those ingredients, vitamins and calories. And when we are hungry we eat most of the food they cook though I have to admit that very often the quality and variety of dishes in our school canteen leave much to be desired. Everything is changing in this world and there are lots of new recipes nowadays. In my opinion they should pay attention to it.
