Card 10 Let’s talk about different types of houses.
Tell us about the house/flat you live in.
I'm sure that for all people home is not just a place to live in. Home is our little world where we live according to your own rules and interests. It's a place where you feel comfort, warmth and reliability.
I live on the second floor in a three-room flat with all modern conveniences such as electricity, running water, central heating, etc.
When you enter the flat, you find yourself in a long hall. It is a place where we greet our guests and it's the place where you can get the first impressions of our flat, that's why we decorated our entrance hall with some pictures.
The first door on the right leads into my parents' bedroom. It is a very convenient room, though there isn't much furniture there. There is a double-bed near the wall and two bed-side tables by its sides with photos. In front of the bed stands a dressing table with a big mirror.
The next room is mine. I should say it is my favourite room. I have always tried to make it cosy, because to my mind your room is your face. My room isn't very large though it is rather spacious. My bedroom is also my study, so you can see a table with a computer on it and some bookshelves on the wall with various books. Not far from the table there is my bed. You can also find a wardrobe, a chest of drawers in my room and a fluffy carpet on the floor.
Our living room is the largest and the busiest in our flat. Every evening we get together there and discuss some problems and events, watch TV or read magazines. This room is filled with cheerful and friendly humor; here you can always hear happy laughing and joyful voices.
Our kitchen with all its conveniences is the most attractive place in the flat where we sit chatting for hours. The air of this room is usually filled with the delicious smells of my mother's cooking, because mainly she is the hostess of the kitchen though my dad does help her.
So it's my flat, my "home, sweet home". It’s very warm and cozy, and it makes me feel at home.
What type of house would you prefer to live in? Why?
I would like to live in a house which has all modern conveniences. It would be nice to live somewhere in the suburbs. In such a way I could enjoy plants and flowers in my own garden. I would prefer to have a spacious living room downstairs and some bedrooms upstairs. It would be a pleasure to have a fireplace in a lounge with big windows and comfy chairs. In such a place it would be nice to meet relatives and friends.
I would like to live in a comfortable flat somewhere in a city. City flats usually have all conveniences ([kən'vi:nɪəns]) which make life easier. People living in flats don’t have to worry about heating and running water, etc. There’s one more advantage of living in a city. Such a place gives us more opportunities for education, work and entertainment than living in a cottage somewhere in the country. And it’s more important for me.
What questions will you ask your parents about the flat/house your family is going to move into? …………… CARD 9 question 3
Your friend is going to decorate his/her room. Give him/her some advice on how to furnish it.
If you are going to decorate your room, you’d better surf different sites online to learn as more as possible about flat design and define the colour for your decoration. When you find out what you really like you should think what you can afford and try to combine your ideas and possibilities (means).
They say the room you live in reflects your character and personality. What do you think of
this idea?
I'm sure that the room of a person is as much a reflection of his personality, as the clothes he wears, the food he eats, the books he reads and the friends he spends his time with. Homes usually reflect the way of life and habits of their owners. The room of a person holds most of his belongings and is decorated in his favourite colours and with the pictures he/she likes and we can find out a lot about a person’s character just looking at his things and feeling the atmosphere of the room.
