Card 22 Let’s talk about environment.
People say that our planet is in danger. Do you share this opinion?
Yes, I do. Environmental problems have become the most urgent problems of modern society. More and more people suffer from air and water, land and nuclear pollution.
The reasons for such environmental problems are numerous. Among them are increasing number of cars in the streets, factory waste(s), deforestation, destroyed habitats of animals, contaminated rivers and seas.
Most of these problems are caused by human careless activities and gradually destroy our planet. I do think our planet is in danger.
What do you think people should do to protect the environment?
Fortunately, there are some ways to suspend these problems. If everybody starts caring about the planet we live on, many environmental problems can be solved. There are four solutions to the environmental problems – four Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle, respect.
For example, if we start recycling paper and cardboard, we can save lots of trees. Most of the waste produced by people can be recycled.
If we start using public transport more than private cars, we can have less air pollution.
The most important thing is, of course, to start acting immediately otherwise we might have to face many global disasters.
What would you like to ask your British friend about measures that are taken to protect the environment in Britain?
What waste do you recycle in your country? You recycle your books, don’t you? Do you use energy-saving light bulbs? How do you save electricity in Britain? Do many people live in energy-saving houses in your country?
A friend of yours wants to develop a programme to protect the city where he lives.
Give him a piece of advice.
First of all it would be useful to find out as more as possible about the environmental problems in the area and different solutions to them. The Internet is at our disposal.
The following step is to organize a team of enthusiastic people who would like to change the environmental situation for the better.
Then they should think of what they can do in reality – such a programme should be realistic.
Green School of the Year contest is held in the country and you want your school to enter it. Give ideas for some ‘green events’.
Green schools are very popular all over the world now. A Green School is a school that integrates efforts to reduce schools' ecological footprints, make school environments healthier, and get the whole community thinking about solutions to the problems we face. So what can we do to enter the contest?
I think first of all we should build a Team. Positive change often begins with a great team. Then a Green Team can create an action plan to inspire others and celebrate a healthier, more sustainable school.
The action plan can promote a zero waste reduce-and-recycle program and energy conservation.
We can get started with some actions like:
Plant a tree for free. It will make the area around the school healthier.
Buy school supplies with the Earth in mind to inform the students how to buy earth friendly things for school)
Make tips for students how to save paper and energy at school.
I think such actions will help to form a kind of positive attitude to solving ecological problems.
