1. Match the words from the left column with their definitions in the right colomn.

1 a valve- a. get back to a primary position,

2.velocity- b. the size or power of something such as an engine,

3.acceleration energy- c. mechanical device for controlling the flow of liquid,

4.recover- gas in one direction only,

5.decelerate- d. quickness, speed,

6 capacity- e.outer opening, hole,

7 orifice- f. making or being made quickly, rate of incre g. diminish speed, opposite to accelerate

2. Write your ideas of what you would like to know about the pressure drop.

3. Read the text and say if you have found the answer. Methods to control the pressure drop

There are three methods to control the pressure drop:

A valve. A multitude of designs exists, but the basic parameter, which is changed, is the

cross section and thus the velocity. Simultaneously the hydrolic diameter changes, the flow changes direction a little the necessary acceleration energy is not fully recovered when

the flow finally decelerates.

Flow length and roughness have little importance

An orifice. The same principle as a valve but fixed.

A capillary tube, which is a thin long tube usually spiral wound to save space. All the parameters above are important and have to be balanced with each other.

Compared to an orifice, which is a hole in a wall, the cross section can be made larger

as the flow length plays an important part for the pressure drop. This is important for small

capacity devices, where an orifice would require such a small hole that it could easily be

clogged by wear and tear products.

It is usually a fixed design used for small systems such as refrigerators.

4. Find the key words in the text and guess the meaning. Use a dictionary to check the answer.

5. Discuss the question.

1.How many methods of control are there?

2.What is the basic changeable parameter?

3.What changes simultaneously with this parameter?

4. Is acceleration energy fully recovered?

6. Why is a capillary tube usually spiral?

7. Is the length of the tube important?
