1 Key words
Flooded flow, vessel,, to settle, gravity, centrifugal, recirculated liquid, natural, forced circulation, separator- evaporator, expansion valve, loop.
2. Match the translation with the key words.
3. Make up sentences with the key words from ex.1.
4. Write your ideas of what you would like to know about the flooded flow.
5. Read the text and say if you have found the answer.
Flooded flow.
The vapour and liquid are separated, usually in a vessel large enough for the liquid droplets to settle by gravity or, sometimes, by centrifugal force.
The liquid together with recirculated liquid enters the evaporator, partly evaporates. The emerging vapour-liquid mixture re-enters the separator, where the vapour and liquid separate.
The circulation can either be natural – thermosiphon – or by a pump-forced circulation.
The vapour joins the expansion vapour and leaves for the compressor. The liquid mixes withthe expansion liquid and re-enters the evaporator.
The vapour from the evaporator is neither dry nor superheated. Thus, there is no superheat to be used as a control variable. The expansion is controlled by the level of liquid in the separator, instead. If the level decreases, the expansion valve opens and more refrigerant enters the separator-evaporator loop.
6. Complete the sentences.
The vapour and liquid are…….
The emerging vapour- liquid mixture……..
7
The liquid…….
The vapour from the evaporator is……..
The expansion is…….
If the level ……
7. Discuss the questions
1 Where are the vapour and liquid separated?
2 Why are the vessels large enough?
3 What happens to the liquid and recirculated liquid enters the evaporator?
4 Where do vapour and liquid separate?
5 What kind of circulation do you know?
6 What does mixture of vapour and the expansion vapour leave for?
7 Why there is no superheat to be used?
8 What is the expansion controlled by?
9 What happens if the level decreases?
8. Complete the sentences with the correct form of the verbs in bra-
ckets.
1 The liquid usually ( mix)____________with the expansion liquid and (re-enter) the evaporator.
2 The liquid (mix)____________________with the expansion liquid and (re-enter) ________the evaporator now.
3 The liquid (mix)_________________with the expansion liquid and (re-enter) the evaporator ten minutes ago.
4 The liquid _____just (mix)________with the expansion liquid.
9. Translate these sentences into English.
