A plate heat exchanger consists of a frame plate, a pressure plate, channel plates, a carrying bar, a support column, a guiding bar, a bolt protection, tightening bolts, connections,
pipe connections and protective sheets that are mandatory in the USA, but in other countries
are optional.
Carrying bar carries the channel plates and the pressure plate. Heat is transferred
from one medium to the other through the thin channel plates. The number of plates determines the total heat transfer surface. A Pressure plate is a moveable steel plate. In
cases pipes can be connected to the pressure plate. A guiding bar keeps the channel plates in line at their lower end. The holes through the frame plate, permitting the media to enter into the heat exchanger are called connections. Threaded studs around the holes secure the pipes to the apparatus. Metallic or rubber-type linings may be used to protect the holes against corrosion. Connections can also be pipes for welding or threaded. Tightening bolts
press the channel plates together.
