The compressor.
The vapour from the evaporator is compressed from the evaporation pressure to the
condensing pressure. The compressor is mechanically complicated but its function
is simple and easy to monitor and it is usually dependable. Normally the worst thing
that can happen is liquid hammering, equivalent to knocking in a motor.
Different compressor types respond differently to liquid hammering, the most sen-
sitive being the piston and the scroll compressor. The least sensitive is the screw
compressor, possibly because of the oil content.
