The Past Perfect Continuous вживається:

1) для вираження минулої дії, яка тривала в минулому деякий період часу, і закінчилась (або могла ще тривати) при настанні другогої, більш пізньої минулої дії. Ця друга, більш пізня минула дія, виражається в Past Indefinite. Past Perfect Continuous перекладається українською мовою дієсловом у минулому часі, звичайно недоконаного виду:

I had been writing my exercises for two hours when my friend came. - Я писав вправи (минула дія) дві години (вказано на ​​період часу), коли прийшов мій друг (друга, більш пізня минула дія, при настанні якої перша дія закінчилася або могла ще тривати).

The new turbine had been working for several hours before we gave it a full load. - Нова турбіна працювала (минула дія) кілька годин (вказано на ​​період часу) до того, як ми дали їй повне навантаження (друга, більш пізня минула дія, при настанні якої перша дія не закінчилась).
