Вони завжди починаються з питальних слів: «What», «When», «Where», «Why», «How long». Ці питання будуються за такою схемою: Питальне слово – was/were –головний об'єкт – слово-процес – інші частини речення?

Давайте розглянемо побудову спеціальних питань на прикладах:

Where was she eating? - Де вона їла?

Why were they sleeping for so long? - Чому вони спали так довго?

Відповіді на питання в Past Continuous

Відповідати на загальні питання «так/ні» в Past Continuous дуже просто. Давайтерозглянемо це на прикладах:

Were they playing together? - Yes, they were. No, they weren't. (Вони грали разом? –Так. Ні.)

Was she sleeping? - Yes, she was. No, she wasn't. (Вона спала? – Так. Ні.)

Як видно з прикладів, відповіді на такі питання будуються наступним чином:

Відповіді «Так». Спочатку ставимо «Yes», потім – займенник (як правило, з питання), а далі слово «was» або «were». Тільки зверніть увагу, що займенник «you» при відповіді змінюється на «I» і навпаки. Наприклад:

Were they working long hours? - Yes, they were. (Вони працювали допізна? Так.)

Was she smiling? - Yes, she was. (Вона посміхалася? Так.)

Відповіді «Ні». Спочатку ставимо «No», потім займенник (як правило, з питання), а далі «wasn’t» (was not) або «weren’t» (were not). Наприклад:

Were they working long hours? - No, they weren't. (Вони працювали допізна? Ні.)

Was she smiling? - No, she wasn't. (Вона посміхалася? Ні.)

На спеціальні питання відповідають повними реченнями. Наприклад:

When were they celebrating their birthdays? - They were celebrating their birthdays on Monday. (Коли вони відзначали свої дні народження? Вони відзначали свої днінародження в понеділок.)

Поняття:

Щоб повідомити про тривалу дію, що Ви виконували в минулому, використовуйте Past Continuous. Ці дії є минулими і тривалими. Тому час, за допомогою якого ми будемо виражати ці дії, називається «Past Continuous» (Минулий тривалий час). Як сказати, що людина перебувала в процесі виконання дії? Для цього вам знадобиться два елементи, які створять одне складне дієслово:

1) Дієслово «be» у минулому часі: was/were

2) Слово-процес (дієслово із закінченням «ing»), що вкаже на те, у процесі виконання якої саме дії перебуває людина. Склавши їх разом ми одержуємо дію, яка виражена у Past Progressive:

«was/were» + «слово-процес».

The leading industries are: machine-building, ship-building, wood processing, foot industry: especially dairy products, cereal crops and others.    It has been admitted that when Jacques Cartier arrived at what is now Monreal in 1534, there were between two and three million native people living to what is now Canada. They were divided into many families and clans.    The actual fact is that when the white man first arrived in North America, the native people received him hospitably with all honour and kindness. The native of Canada had complicated cultures and a civilized system of government far more satisfactory that the white man has done. The land was large, food was plentiful, and there was room and foot enough for the relatively small number of people. When the white man first arrived, the Indians had no weapons for war. They had only the clubs and bows they used for hunting.    Within a few years after Confederation the Indian way of life had just about vanished in Canada. The Indians population had been reduced, not by warfare, but by disease. The white man brought to North America many diseases which the Indians had never suffered before and to which they had built up absolutely no defense. Among these were influenza, tuberculosis, bronchitis and cholera.    In destroying the Indian culture, the white man did not provide them with a man way of life and at the same time did everything possible to prevent them from finding one for them.
