This is Newcastle

As the second city of New South Wales, Newcastle has become the regional capital and focal point for the whole Hunter Valley Region. Its settlement dates back to the very early days of the history of this country. More than 160 years of development have seen Newcastle grow into one of Australia’s major centers of heavy in­dustry, mining and transportation.

But Newcastle is much more than an industrial city: recently there has been increasing growth of industry and employ­ment, especially in services, com­merce, professions, education, etc. Residential growth has taken place in new and attractive areas, especially around Lake Macquarie and the surrounding hills making Newcastle the most desirable urban environment, complemented with the many services and facilities needed in a large city.

Coal, the re­gion’s earliest major resource, has recently increased its strong position in our economic structure, and as well as maintaining the region’s steel and power industries, has become more prominent as a regional export commodity.

The Port of Newcastle is well established in terms of cargo tonnage handled.

Year by year the City of Newcastle has improved the services and environment for both the urban population and investors. The city fulfils its role of commercial, cultural and educatio­nal centre and principal market for the region.
