A satisfactory installation

Rossimport

Dear Sirs,

We refer to the visit of our specialists and would like to thank you for receiving them and assisting them on site. We have now had the opportunity to review their report and to advise you of the action we will be taking for the machine to give a satisfactory performance.

We are sure the machine can be adjusted to suit specific applications. From our experience the design supplied has been found best for this process and, indeed, adequate efficiency has been achieved in the Ukraine on the same machine design.

Enclosed herewith please find a list with a number of mechanical modifications which we propose to make to your machines to increase your available capacity considerably.

We are now assembling all the necessary components and await your instructions for shipping to site. In that respect we would ask you to assist us in ensuring that the components are expeditiously sent to. site in Russia and, also, that we have your assurance that unwanted components will be returned similarly to the UK. On receipt of the consignment at site, we will arrange for our specialists to complete commissioning work. However, before sending our engineers to site, we would ask for your assurance that the modifications to your system and necessary tools as recommended by our engineers have been incorporated. All components to correct any deficiency on our part will, where possible, be sent with the consignment.

Please let us know if you have any queries or comments arising from the above and, meanwhile, please be assured of our co-operation to achieve a satisfactory installation.

Yours faithfully,

Technical Manager

Think and answer.

  1. What progress had been made on the contract?

  2. Which side was responsible for the low capacity of the machine?

  3. At whose expense were the engineers sent again?

  4. What are the contractual obligations of the Sellers in supervision of erection contracts?

A new job

Part 1

Mr. Hunt An interesting job has been advertised in the paper. A sales manager's required by a large company. I've written to them but I haven't been contacted yet. This is a copy of the letter which I sent.

The Personnel Manager,

World Computer Company,

Basingstoke,

Hampshire.

Dear Sir,

Sales Manager Ref: J6/Q

I am interested in the post of sales manager which you advertised in today's newspaper.

At the moment I am employed by International Computer Co. Ltd. For the last three years I have been in their Geneva office. While I was there, I was promoted to general manager of the sales, advertising and marketing departments. Other positions which I have held have included production manager for Anglia Computers and head of the research department of the same firm.

I hope that an application form will be sent to me.

Yours faithfully,

Guy Hunt

Part 2

Worry

Mr. Hunt Today's post hasn't been brought up yet, has it?

Mrs. Hunt No. The receptionist has been asked to ring us when it arrives. You haven't heard from W.C.C. yet, have you?

Mr. Hunt No.

Mrs. Hunt When was the letter posted?

Mr. Hunt Last Wednesday.

Mrs. Hunt Where are their machines sold?

Mr. Hunt In Europe and Asia. According to the latest report, there are offices in eight countries: England, the U.S.A., France, Sweden, Italy, Japan, Australia and Canada.

Mrs. Hunt The receptionist has just rung. The post's just been delivered.

Mr. Hunt I'd rather not see it.

Mrs. Hunt It's what you were waiting for... W.C.C.'s reply. Tell me what they say.

Mr. Hum What a pity! The post's already been filled. My letter's been put in their file.

Mrs. Hunt Sorry; where was it put?

Mr. Hunt In their file. I'll be contacted when there's another similar vacancy.

A job in the London office

Mr. Hunt Why were you smiling just then?

Mrs. Hunt Because I was reading this letter from I.C.

Mr. Hunt Tell me what I.C. wants.

Mrs. Hunt Listen to this:

International Computer Co. Ltd.

Ward Avenue,

London, S.W.7.

15th July, 1971

Dear Mr. Hunt,

While we were having lunch last week, I mentioned a job in our London office. I have now been authorized to offer it to you.

If you accept our offer, it will mean that your salary will be increased. I have spoken to our accounts department and, according to them, we are able to offer you an additional four hundred pounds a year. You will also be given four weeks holiday per annum instead of three weeks.

I have enclosed some documents, one of which shows our profit and loss account and another our plans for future expansion. You might like to look at these while you are considering our offer.

Yours sincerely,

Stephen Curtis

The decision

Mr. Hunt Well, Sarah. What do you think?

Mrs. Hunt It sounds like a good job but I'd rather not live in London.

Mr. Hunt Oh, that's what's worrying you. Well, don't worry about it. While I was talking to Steve, I mentioned this and he suggested we lived in the country outside London.

Mrs. Hunt Perhaps we won't like living in the south.

Mr. Hunt Well, if we don't like it, we can leave. I warned Steve about that.

Mrs. Hunt Well ... all right.
