Some outstanding Ukrainian scientists

I cannot say that I have concerned myself much with science and scientists in this country. But being an educated person I can’t but either have read about or have watched on TV the most outstanding discoveries in different branches of science. Such names as V. Vernadsky, B. Paton, M. Sklifosofsky, D. Zabolotny and a lot of others are very much familiar to us. They have made a great contribution to the world science for the benefit of their country. They have discovered a way of manufacturing artificial diamonds and have developed the method of welding. Great progress has been achieved by our scientists in nuclear physics, chemistry, biology, geology, etc.

Another name worth mentioning is Academician Boris Paton who has made great achievements in metallurgy. He was born in the family of Yevgeny Paton who worked in the fields of electric welding and bridge-building. The son has continued the course of his father in the sphere of electric welding He has introduced many inventions into electric metallurgy. For many years he headed the Electric Welding Institute and in 1990 he was elected the President of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.

The Ukrainian Academy of Sciences was founded in Kiev in1919.Since its foundation it has become the centre of the scientific life of the country. The outstanding scientist V. Vernadsky became the first president of the Academy. He is famous for his discoveries of new branches of chemistry (geochemistry, biological geochemistry, radiological). In general, he was a wise man, a person of broad views.

Thanks to different discoveries in different spheres of life a lot of good has been done to people. The peaceful atom, for example, has given power to many units in the automatic space stations. Atomic power stations give electric power to many towns, factories, villages and farms. Automatic manipulators (known as robots) are used to make work of people easier. Thus, in a word, science serves the interests of people.
