Часові форми групи Continuous позначають дії в процесі розвитку у зазначений момент теперішнього, минулого чи майбутнього часу.
Деякі дієслова не можуть виражати дію чи стан як процес, що відбувається у вказаний момент, і, отже, вживатися в часових формах групи Continuous. До них відносяться: to love — любити, to want — хотіти, to like — подобатися, to hate — ненавидіти, to wish, to desire — бажати, to see — бачити, to hear — чути, to feel — почувати, to notice — зауважувати, to know — знати, to understand — розуміти, to consist — складатися, to belong — належати, to recognize — дізнаватися, to be — бути й ін.
Часові форми групи Continuous можуть вживатися з такими показниками часу, як now — зараз, all day long — увесь день, all day (yesterday, tomorrow) — (вчора, завтра), at this time — у цей час, at this moment — у цей момент, at noon — опівдні, at ... о'сlоск — в... годин, from ... till ... — від ... до ... і ін.
