Доконані часи (Perfect Tenses) позначають дії, що відбулися до зазначеного моменту в теперішньому, минулому чи майбутньому.
Present Perfect часто вживається з прислівниками неозначеного часу (already, just, yet, never, ever) і зі словами, що виражають ще не минулі періоди часу (today, this year, this month, this week, this morning і т.д.).
Present Perfect вживається для вираження дії, що почалася в минулому і не закінчилася до вказаного моменту, а все ще продовжується. Період дії звичайно зазначається за допомогою сполучника for (протягом) чи за допомогою слова since (з, з тих пір як, з тих пір). У цьому випадку Present Perfect перекладається українською мовою як дієслово у дійсному часі: I have lived here since 1970. — Я живу тут з 1970 року.
Визначений момент в минулому (Past Perfect) чи майбутньому (Future Perfect) виражається показниками часу зі сполучником by — до (by 3 o'clock yesterday, by that time, by 8 o'clock tomorrow), або іншим способом.
