Shinsegae Group to Hire 1,000 More Flextime Workers

November 11, 2013 19:30 l November 11, 2013 22:05

Shinsegae Group will create up to 1,000 new "flextime" jobs until the year's end. The retail group said on November 11 it would hire about 1,000 employees who work on flexible time schedules at the "2013 Flextime Job Fair" to be held in the 26 at Seoul's Coex Center. For this year to date the company already employed a total of 1,068 flextime workers this year for its E-Mart, Starbucks, and Shinsegae Department Store units.

At the job fair to be sponsored by the Ministry of Employment & Labor, Ministry of Strategy & Finance, and Ministry of Gender Equality & Family, a score of employers such as Shinhan Financial Group, CJ, Lotte, and Hanjin Group will participate in addition to Shinsegae.

Flextime jobs are ideal for those who are unable to work full time for reasons such as childcare or school work. Even though they work fewer than 40 hours a week, they get paid the same bonuses and other benefits such as school tuition allowances and health and unemployment insurance as any other full-time workers. But salaries are paid in proportion to hours worked.

Shinsegae Group plans to hire 540 such workers for E-Mart, 300 for Starbucks, 80 for the department store, and 100 or so for its Shinsegae International, Shinsegae Food, and Shinsegae SVN.

Analysis

Action: Shinsegae Group plans to hire around 1000 flextime workers until of the year’s end. Today company already has 1068 flextime employees in their E-Mart, , Starbucks, and Shinsegae Department Store units, and they will hire 540 more for E-Mart, 300 for Starbucks 80 for the department store and 100 for others units. Flextime job is the good opportunity for those who can’t work fulltime for different personal reasons such as sickness or child care, but want to get job.

Affect: Obviously that this action will increase their human capital, but why this story is so interesting. Firstly, before the action flextime workers were insecure, low-paid and in high turnover rates, but Shinsegae totally changed the situation. Their flextime workers have the same social package including medical insurance and etc. as a fulltime employees. Wages are the same with respect to hours worked. Secondly, people who worked for Shinsegae as a flextime worker more likely will apply for fulltime job in Shinsegae. It is very beneficial for the company because those employees will be already experienced, and company will not spend money and time for teaching them.

Asiana Brings in Japanese Safety Chief Executive

November 10, 2013 18:37 l November 11, 2013 07:44

Asiana Airlines has brought in a chief executive in charge of safety affairs, as a way to strengthen safety operations following the accident in San Francisco Airport in July this year. This is the first time for the airline to hire a foreigner as a safety executive since its founding in 1988.

The company said on November 10 that it has appointed Akiyoshi Yamamura, former executive of All Nippon Airways, as chief executive for safety affairs (vice president level), who will begin to work from December 1.

Mr. Yamamura had long been with ANA, first as a pilot and then as a safety manager. He retired from the Japanese company in May this year. Recently he took the job of a safety inspector with the International Air Transport Association. As a member of the Star Alliance, ANA recommended him strongly for the job. Asiana Airlines expects that bringing in an outsider would enhance its safety records as insiders may tend to take things for granted.

Analysis

Action: Asiana Airlines appointed a chief executive in charge of safety affairs. I want to highlight that this is the first time for the company to hire outsider on such a high position. “Asiana Airlines expects that bringing in an outsider would enhance its safety records as insiders may tend to take things for granted.”

Target: Increasing level of safety in Asiana Airlines. They started thinking about it after plane crush in San Francisco.

Affect: First of all when we are talking about Korean management style, we know some key points of it. Firstly, promotion is to respect with your working experience in the company, high levels chiefs only from company staff. Asiana Airlines is very interesting case because they hire outsider. Maybe they hired him under the pressure of International Air Transport Association, maybe because they recognized that they need some changes, but anyway. New high level manager (btw Japanese) obviously will bring something new into system. Firstly he will put under an observation all managerial staff which involved in safety affairs. Then he will dismiss some of them, and finally he will bring new managers and change safety department management system according to his preferences. Asiana Airlines will face big changes in management structure.
