3. Визначте вірне речення чи невірне згідно змісту тексту.

1. In some cases many shapes are difficult or even impossible to produce by conventional machining operations.

2. The designer should check up on standard shapes and sizes and then design components that require a minimum of machining.

3. Rubbers are usually sold in plates, sheets, bars, rods, strips or in the tube form.

4. When choosing the material for a component the designer must not consider applicability, cost, availability, mach inability, and the amount of machining required.

5. The choice will depend on the components function and will be influenced by such factors as strength, resistance to wear, appearance, corrosion resistance, etc.

Measurement

Measurement has developed slowly and gradually from the earliest times. Since man first realized the necessity of estimating the size of various objects which he encountered in his everyday life, one thing has served at all times and in all places as a standard, and that was his body: the foot, the pace, the fathom, etc. became units of measure.

A method of measuring areas of land was derived from the customary manner of plowing with yoke of oxen: hence the furlong the rod, the yard; the acre. From the accepted standard yard all English units of length are derived: a foot is the third part of a yard; an inch is the 12th part of a foot; 5 1 /2 yards are equal to a rod; 220 yards to a furlong, a 1760 yards to a mile.

The Metric System is based on the meter and kilogram. Using metric units length is usually measured in millimeters, centimeters, meters or kilometers, time is measured in seconds, minutes, or hours; and mass is measured in grams, or kilograms.

The chief advantage of the Metric system over the English units is that all metric units are divided into 10 or 100 parts. This enables fractional distances and masses to be expressed as decimals. Decimals are easier to add, divide, etc.

The foot-pound-second (FPS) system is used in Great Britain and the USA. The Metric system was invented in France and accepted universally in science but not in engineering or commerce.

In 1960 the General Conference of Weights and Measures on the International System of Units approved the system of units know as SI System of Units. The basic SI units encounted in engineering are as follows:

The unit of length is the meter- m

The unit of mass is the kilogram- kg

The unit of time is the second- s

All other units can be written as some combination of the three basic units:

Area= length x length

Volume= length x length x length

Speed= length

Time

To simplify the representation of units a standard list of abbreviations has been adopted.
