A. Think about the following questions for class discussion.

  • What is standard pronunciation?

  • What accounts for the opinion that the orthoepic norm embraces a wide range of pronunciation rather than a single variety of pronunciation?

  • Why do pronouncing dictionaries get out-of-date sooner or later?

  • Do all the speakers of one and the same language necessarily use the same number of phonemes?

  • May dialects (social or regional) doffer not only in the realizations of phonemes, but also in their phoneme inventories?

  • Why have dialects shown such remarkable liveliness in spite of the numerous factors that encourage standardization of pronunciation?

  • What accent places an English speaker in a privileged social category?

  • Which of the developments of Received Pronunciation (RP) have become well-established and accepted?

  • What is Advanced RP?

  • What are the main differences in the phoneme inventories, of the Northern regional type of English pronunciation (as opposed to RP)?

B. Analyse the pronunciation of the following words: because, literature, resource, translate, education. Find more examples to illustrate the fact that the orthoepic norm is changing and developing, and that it embraces a wide range of pronunciation varieties.

B. Select some phrases from tape-recordings made by English dialect speakers. Reproduce those phrases to illustrate British English dialectal pronunciation.

B. Listen to the recording of the poem “A Red, Red Rose” by Robert Burns. What regional type of English pronunciation is reflected in this recording?

A Red, Red Rose

Robert Burns

O my Luve’s like a red, red rose,

That’s newly sprung in June;

O my Luve’s like a melodie,

That’s sweetly play’d in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,

So deep in luve am I:

And I will luve thee still, my dear,

Till a’ the seas gang dry.

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,

And the rocks melt we’ the sun;

And I will luve thee still, my dear,

While the sands o’ life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only Luve!

And fare thee weel a while!

And I will come again, my Luve,

Tho’ it were ten thousand mile.
