                  2. The (удельный вес) of minerals is compared to water, which has a (удельный вес) of 1.

                  3. All minerals have a definite hardness, which is the mineral's ability to (царапать) or (быть поцарапанными).

                  4. Because minerals are (химикаты), they have special (свойства) which help their recognition.

                  5. The (породообразующие) minerals are the ones which make our land on which we live.

                  6. (прожилка) is the color of a powdered mineral, and (блеск) is the way the structure of a mineral reflects or (преломляет) light.

                  7. (Слюда) is an example of perfect (отслоения).

                  8. When molecules are packed together with a minimum of (свободного пространства), as in the metals, the mineral (весит) more.

                  9. Minerals are easily identified by (химический анализ).

4. Find the synonyms to the following words in the text.

include, erudition, quality (characteristic), formation (combination), mass, to be divided into, ideal, certain (exact), thanks to, shine, react, luminescence

5. Match the terms on the left with their definitions on the right. Use them in sentences of your own:

Mica

A solid homogeneous crystalline chemical element or compound that results from the inorganic processes of nature.

Analysis

The smallest particle of a substance that retains all the properties of the substance and is composed of one or more atoms.

Mineral

The quality of a crystallized substance or rock of splitting along definite planes.

Property

Any of various colored or transparent mineral silicates crystallizing in monoclinic forms that readily separate into very thin leaves.

Fracture

A glow of reflected light on the surface of a mineral.

Molecule

An examination of a complex, its elements, and their relations.

Luster

A quality or trait belonging and especially peculiar to an individual or thing.

Cleavage

The act or process of breaking or the state of being broken; esp. the breaking of hard tissue.

6. Say if the following statements correspond to the text. Correct the wrong ones.

  1. Because minerals are chemicals, they have no properties which aid in their recognition.

  2. One of the properties of minerals which depends on their chemical composition is the specific gravity.

  3. The specific gravity of minerals is compared to oxygen, which has a specific gravity of 1.

  4. Mineral crystals fall into five systems, and these can be identified by the angles of the crystal.

  5. The way a mineral breaks in flat planes is called its cleavage.

  6. Minerals also break in an irregular way. This kind of breakage is called fracture and it, too, helps to identify a mineral.

  7. All minerals have a definite softness, which is the mineral's ability to scratch or be scratched.

  8. Hardness is generally measured on an arbitrary scale of 10.

  9. The color of minerals is very important in identification because the color may be due to impurities or surface changes.

  10. Luster is the color of a powdered mineral, and streak is the way the structure of a mineral reflects or breaks up light.

  11. Some minerals are magnetic, some have electrical radioactive properties.

  12. The rock-forming minerals have great importance in the overall history of the earth.
