THE PLANE WAS MADE READY FOR FLIGHT

The aircraft for Flight Two was a Boeing 707, an intercontinental jet liner powered by four Pratt & Whitney turbofan jet engines. The aircraft range, at maximum weight, was six thousand miles and it was able to carry 99 passengers and 25,000gallons of fuel – that amount could fill a good-sized swimming pool. The day before yesterday the aircraft had flown from Dusseldorf, Germany, and two hours out from the airport of destination, an engine overheated. As a precaution, the captain ordered it

shut down. None of the passengers were aware that they were operating with three engines instead of four; if necessary, the aircraft could have flown on one. But on the airfield a crew of mechanics was waiting, so even while taxiing to the hangar,

diagnostic specialists were already allowed to seek out the trouble, which they located quickly. A pneumatic duct – a stainless steel pipe around the affected engine – had cracked and broken in flight. The engine had to be removed and a replacement installed - that was relatively simple. More complicated was the fact that for several minutes before the overheated engine was shut down, extremely hot air must have escaped into the engine nacelle, and this could have damaged one hundred and eight pairs of wires

from the aircraft’s electrical system. As the checks proved, no wires had suffered any visible damage. But the airline took no chances – it was decided that all the wires must be replaced. A non-stop day-and-night work was planned with teams of electrical mechanics relieving each other. The big aircraft was unproductive on the ground, though it was to have flown to the West Coast and back before its next international flight. But the financial loss was accepted without question in order to maintain high safety standards. The Aircraft Maintenance Department, however, had to be quick and effective and complete the job of changing the wires three hours before the next scheduled departure time. The technicians managed it, and they also replaced the engine cowlings in time and run the engine on the ground. But before the aeroplane could be accepted for service, an air test had to be made. On his return, the test pilot certified the plane as completely airworthy. There was so little time left when the test pilot landed, that he taxied the aeroplane directly to gate forty-seven of the terminal, where it was to load. Food and baggage were taken aboard, while the passengers were beginning to check in. Soon the boarding was over, the doors were sealed and Flight Two was allowed to start preparing for the take-off.
