Intonation Practice

A. Listen to each sentence of the fable, write down the most prominent word(s) in it, mark the nuclear tone it (they) takes (take).

B. Listen to the sentences, write them down, mark stressed words in them:

  1. One day, a dog took a bone from a shop.

  1. He came to a river and went over the bridge.

  1. That dog has a big bone.

  2. So in he jumped.

C. Listen to the sentences, write the words on which the pitch changes its direction:

  1. As he looked down into the water, he saw another dog with a bone!

  1. I will jump into the water and take it from him.

  1. When he was in the water, he could not see the other dog.

  2. So, because he was greedy, he got nothing in the end.

D. Classify the intonation groups you hear according to the nuclear tones. Mark the falling tone with F, the rising tone with R:

For example: A dog took a bone from the shop — F.

a) He came to a river …;

b) He saw another dog with a bone;

c) When he was in the water…;

d) If you want more because you are greedy…;

e) …and went over the bridge;

f) As he looked down into the water…;

g) One day…;

h) …he could not see the other dog;

i) “I will jump into the water.”

Comprehension Practice

A. Write down your answers to the following questions revealing the plot of the fable.

1) What did the dog steal from a shop one day?

2) Why did he run off with in?

3) Where did the dog come to?

4) Who did he see in the water?

5) Why did the dog jump into the water?

6) Could he see the other dog and the other bone in the water? If not, then why? Give your reasons?

7) Why did the dog get nothing in the end?

8) What is the moral of the fable?

B. Listen to the text, divide it into communicative blocks, entitle them.

C. Listen to the text, find the logical centre of each communicative block and of the whole text. Write them down.

D. Listen to the jumbled sentences and put them in the right order to complete the fable.

a) As he looked down into the water, he saw another dog with a bone!

  1. So in he jumped.

  2. He had lost his own bone, too, because it fell as he jumped in.

  3. One day, a dog took a bone from a shop.

  4. He did not know that the dog he saw in the water was a reflection of himself.

  5. When he was in the water, he could not see the other dog.

  6. So, because he was greedy, he got nothing in the end.

  7. He ran off with it before anyone could catch him.

  8. If you want more because you are greedy, in the end you might find less.

  9. And he could not see the other bone either.

  10. "That dog has a big bone."

  11. He came to a river and went over the bridge.

  12. "It is as big as mine," he said.

  13. Moral:

  14. "I will jump into the water and take it from him"

Written Practice

A. Complete the following sentences.

  1. One day...

  2. He came to a river...

  3. c)...he saw another dog with a bone.

  4. He didn't know that...

  5. "I will jump into the water"...

  6. When he was in the water...

  7. And he could not see...

  8. He had lost his own bone, too, because…

B. Find in the text the reason the dog jumped into the water, write it down.

C. Comment on the moral of the fable describing the greedy dog. What do you think the author’s attitude towards greediness is (positive or negative)? Do it in writing.

D. Write general, alternative and disjunctive questions (five for each type) referring to the plot of the fable.

E. State the grammar tenses in the narration. Give reasons for the Present Simple and Past Simple functioning in the fable. Write down the Present Simple of the irregular verbs mentioned in the text.

F. Write the fable in the Present Simple Tense.

G. Write down your own story, which proves the moral of the fable.
