The English village
The profession of the farmer is very important; farmers produce food supplies which people eat every day. Only small part of the British population are farmers, but they grow a lot of grain, vegetables and fruit and produce much meat and dairy products.
The farmers live and work in the villages and on the farms. An English village usually is not very large – there are several houses, a village shop and a pub. A pub is a place where strong drinks are sold and where the men of the village gather to talk about the weather and the harvest or about football and village news. Usually there is no secondary school in the English village and the village children go to school in the nearest town.
There are many different farms in England: sheep farms, cattle farms, dairy farms, poultry farms and others. On the farm there are various buildings: a farm house, a cowshed, a barn, a poultry yard. The English farmers keep a lot of domestic animals and birds on their farms: cows, sheep, pigs, hens, turkeys.
Fields in England are not very large; they usually have hedges, fences and stone walls around them. The south of England is often called the “Garden of England”; in this part of the country there are many gardens and large plantations of different berries.

The Village of Knightshouse
Mr. Jackson, a village priest, lives in the village of Knightshouse. In the village there are 4 shops, a pub, two petrol falling stations, 25 houses and a church. Near the church there is an ancient cemetery with old trees around it.
In Knightshouse there is a post-office, too. Near the post-office there is a mail-box and several telephone boxes.
In the village there is also a Community centre, a pub and a motel.
The village of Knightshouse is situated on the bank of a wide canal. In Knightshouse there is a big bridge over the canal. Many cars, buses and lorries run through the village every day.
Not far from the bridge on a green hill you can see an ancient castle. The tourists often come to Knightshouse to visit the castle. Near the castle on the bank of the canal you can see several windmills. Behind the castle there is a forest.
