С Telling the time

There are three different ways of saying the time:

1 In conversation, we use past (AmE after) and to (AmE of)

five past two

ten past eight

quarter past one

half past three

nine o’clock

five to seven

ten to eleven

quarter to seven

twenty to six

twelve o’clock

2 Sometimes we use he figures only. Say the figures in the order you see them.

2.05 two oh five

8.10 eight ten

1.15 one fifteen

3.30 three thirty

6.55 six fifty-five

10.50 ten fifty

6.45 six forty-five

5.40 five forty

With this form, we often say a.m. for the morning and p.m. for the afternoon and evening.

e.g. The office closes at 5.30 p.m.

Breakfast is served between 7 and 9 a.m.

3 In Britain and the USA, we usually use the 24-hour lock only to talk about travel timetables.
